"Within The Rot's spreading grasp, there is no end. A stagnation beyond mere stasis awaits, its victims frozen between the boundaries of Life and Death. Soil and sea decay, the very air tainted with stillness and fit only to catch your breath just shy of your last. Amidst The Rot, there is no future: no seeds sprout and no young are born, for all that remains in those unfortunate lands is that which should not.
And remain they do. Deathless forms trudge through greying grass and cracking earth, with mind and soul long lost. Remnants, they are called: a fitting name for what The Rot leaves in its wake. With lightless eyes they seek those who are unblighted and strike as a predator would its prey. Thus do the Remnants grow in number, for no mortal wound sustained within The Rot's reach shall ever truly be fatal.
Take heed of these words of caution, Eko. The Rot surrounds... and the careless it consumes."

Phew, finally this one is done!
I've had this piece sitting unfinished for maybe more than a year now, occasionally chipping at it whenever I had an idea to try out and then going back to work on other art afterwards. In a way, I'm glad I took my time with it even if it took so long, because I think it's better now than it would've been if I finished it when I first started it.
This isn't any specific scene in Echoes Apart, but it was intended to showcase The Rot, which is the main threat of the story. In the setting, the influence of Death as a concept is weakening and it's thrown the cycle of life and death out of whack, resulting in parts of Aurius decaying but being unable to die. The Rot is slowly spreading throughout the world and Eko will have to face it many times, but if they're lucky, maybe they won't wind up in a situation nearly as bad as this one.

This looks excellent! I'm glad you got around to finishing it, since it looked really promising from the start (hence pestering you to complete it, haha). It's great to see you try your hand at environment drawing again - the scene looks great and very atmospheric. I love the encroaching fog and how it just barely lets you see the ominous shapes in the background, as if the forest itself is made of creatures and other threats. Not to mention them blending in amid the foreground too, where you might not be sure if something is a claw or merely a branch. I think it's a great touch and brings to mind how we can see shapes in shadows so easily. Except in this case they're probably quite real! D:
I also like how you made the leaves along the top edge look withered, with the extra ones falling away; it really makes the area look like it's decaying around Eko, with the canopy itself just perishing more with each passing moment. The centre being the last holdout of any colour, alongside Eko's magic, is a nice way to show just how cornered they are. Eko contrasts nicely with their environment and the sheer amount of open space around them really makes it clear how alone they are and the scale of the threat closing in around them. Their expression and body language is great as well. :)
It's a really well-drawn scene and I definitely think you should give more environments a go in the future, at least when you're up for it. I'd be very curious to see the various regions of Aurius drawn sometime. For now, this is a nice visual insight into what the rot can look like, even if the scene itself may not actually happen. Oh, and I really like the bit of writing you included in the description too!

Thank you so much! <3
I had a repeating dance between getting the shapes in the fog visible but not by too much, I think I must've adjusted that part of the picture once per visit to this over the last year or so and found the right balance for what I wanted when I came back to it recently. I always wanted Eko to kinda stand out against the rest, along with the patch of safety they're standing in, though it was challenging doing that without overdoing it: I was really aiming for that cornered feeling and I'm glad it comes through.
I think this has definitely been a confidence boost on drawing environments for me, because it's easy to think "ugh, I can't do them" but now it feels like I can. I'd love to take a crack at a few places in Aurius and intend to at some point. Ideally, I'd like to do those a bit faster than this one!
As for the bit of writing, I thought it'd be a nice addition. It's the kind of thing I used to do more and it felt like this piece was a good one to write a litle thing for.
(As an aside, when you read it before, you were spot-on when you guessed it was Joiros speaking. It doubled as a chance to ask myself how he might describe The Rot to Eko.)
