Based on one of my magic heroes from DCUO.
Thundering Howl is a magic hero who uses both arrows and his electric powers to defeat evil threats to both our world and the magical.
His arrows are used both as attacks and focal points for his electrical powers which he creates by devouring magical energy. He mostly gains this energy by swallowing cursed items and evil magic users.
Faust being an example of one of his favorite snacks.

As for the mercenary title, that is cause he is for hire if someone is dealing with some magic based problem.
