Research tells me that WS was probably born in/around 1710. The dates on some of his stones suggest he was a teen when they were carved but I'm sure they are backdated. Still, he was productive well into the 1760s.

WS's career ended in 1775 when he bugged out to Philadelphia out of concern The British Were Coming to Newport. Apparently John Bull and the rest of his shop finished all of his outstanding commissions.
