Yvette has several sources of income but the most reliable is the salt from the brackish lake adjoining her villa. The water, once collected in glass vessels and evaporated in the punishing desert sun, provides a few dozen pounds of the stuff a week that sell for a fine price so far from the sea. The lake also doubles as a place to bathe, with her servants performing the work of keeping her fur in good condition
