Wild Cards: Jack and Ace, Part 17
Behind a chinese restaurant, the two changed outfits. Elisa taking extra privacy behind a dumpster. When she walked back out, she had her hoodie up, and jeans back on. She also found Isaac fiddling with his rebreather again. He had his jacket and gloves back on, but it seems he didn’t bring a spare mask.
She walked over, and tried to help him with it. “Hey, hey! Don’t pick at it.” She said, “The tape is already weak as it is.”
“I don’t think it’s air tight though..” Isaac said, trying to put it back in place, “I’m sure my uncle can fix it, he’s just gonna be mad to do it… again.”
“Your uncle is okay with you doing this?” Elisa was baffled at first.
“No, I’d never tell him.” Isaac clarified, “My aunt would have a heart attack if she knew.” Then he looked at her, “What about you? How in the world are you doing all this crazy stuff, when you can barely stay awake in class?”
Elisa chuckled, slipping into her facade for just a moment, “You also thought this loser was just a mindless goof?” She stood up straight again, and then did a cartwheel, “I’ve been spry the entire time. I just fake that so people don’t suspect anything. There have been SO many times I wanted to show off in gym class.”
“Holy cow, this changes everything.” Isaac said, then he felt his mask, “Do you want to walk together? I still gotta grab some things for my aunt on the way home.”
The two walked down the streets, talking more with one another, Isaac kept his hand on his rebreather the entire time. “I’m still surprised you’re a super hero, like me. How long have you been doing this for?”
“I started about a year ago…” Elisa said, “I think it was a few months after learning I had powers.” She looked back to her fox friend, “What about you?”
“You’re about a year ahead of me,” Isaac said, “Though I’ve had this illness for far longer.”
“And… this illness, or condition… you use that as your power?” Elisa looked him up and down, “I see why it would be bad, but that just makes it awesome you turn it on those criminals. How long have you had this?”
“Since I could remember.” Isaac said, looking away, “I’m pretty sure I was born with this, but my aunt and uncle never talk about why I’m like this. Most they say is that my parents would be with me if they could have. It doesn’t help me in any way though. If I’m not cold enough, I start to burn like I’m in a fire. But my uncle and aunt took me in, and their pension helps pay for my… medical needs. I was stuck in my room so often, or having to wear this junk whenever I leave it. All the while, there’s people with better bodies and better lives, and they decide to attack other people and ruin their lives. It sickens me, now I’m out and about showing them the raw end of the stick.”
Elisa’s ears lowered, “Jeeze, sorry bud.” She looked away, “Now I feel awkward about my origin story.”
“Really.” Isaac side eyed her, “And how did you get where you are?”
“I don’t know, really.” Elisa said, “One night, I just came across a mugging, then he thinks I had a phone and was recording. The moment he drew his gun on me, I started seeing things, feeling things. I know he’s about to shoot me, and… if I move this one way, the bullet will miss. I do the move and I’m fine… then I know about the next shot, and the next. It helped me close the gap and just go nuts on the mugger.”
“I think I’m missing something.” Isaac said, “Where did that come from though?”
“I told you, I don’t know.” Elisa said, “It just happened, it kicks in whenever I’m in physical danger.”
“Umm… okay?” Isaac said, “But, why do you fight crime then?”
“Same reason I beat up that mugger.” Elisa said, “Because it’s awesome. The fight, the moves, the rush. It gets my blood flowing and my head just spins and drains after it all. It’s just such a blissful feeling.. And if I can get it while kicking down some city scum, then I’ll do it twice.”
“I’d help you do that.” Isaac said, “Seems like you can’t always do it alone.”
Elisa smiled back to him, “Team up? Sounds cool to me.”
“Alright.” Isaac said, “Let’s talk more during lunch, at school.”
