Wandyr weaves a surprisingly mischievous tale. Who knew she had such a vulgar sense of humor?
This was the piece that would define the art style of Donkey. I tried line art and flat color, maybe some glow lighting here and there, but ultimately, my strengths as an artist were missing, and my weaknesses on full blast. I really, really wanted to make Donkey a cartoony, fun-looking comic, but didn't want to lose the more painterly style I'd grown to enjoy. The conflict was that if I drew cartoons in a realist environment, what happens when a cartoon character picks up a painterly rock? Does the rock become a cartoon? We've all seen how in classic cartoons like Tom and Jerry how the one panel in the fence was colored differently, and we'd all know immediately that it was gonna fly up and smack Tom in the face. I didn't want that. But then I realized I could add in shading to the characters, then add in lines to the environment, and unify the two styles in a way that I hadn't tried before. It was a genuine Eureka! moment for me.
