Just a few minor improvements are needed, but overall, Mitternacht or Midnight Raider is complete!
At 690 feet or 210 meters long, 80 foot or 24.3 meter hull diameter, and 24.7 tons empty, Mitter is based on an X-classe Super Zeppelin similar to USS Shenandoah in her early form with six Packard engines. However in the case of Mitternacht, she's equipped with six Mercedes Benz OM606 with a mild tune to swing 6 meter propellers with 223kw of power. Average circuit speed is about 68mph or 109kph. Service ceiling is about 20,000 feet or 6km with a do not exceed ceiling of 22,320 or 6.8km above which cell rupture would occur.
Mitter is as the name suggests, a high speed raider and scout, which serves my sky fleet very well. Hubbs and I often use her to pick on merchants from unfriendly nations, but Mitternacht can hold her own against most air frigates, and cutters of said nations when the need arises. For anything more stout, we have our flying carrier Flugzeugtrager ZFT-131 Koloss.
Mitter's design appears similar to other luftschiff of the era, but one key difference which sets her apart really means the difference when tangling with others. Unlike convention, which states light weight copper-aluminum girders are rigged in square, braced with piano wire, Mitternacht is electrically welded on the bias in a geodesic lattice, like Schutte Lanz ships. This crossing lattice eliminates the need for wire bracing, reducing weight yet enhancing rigidity and damage tolerance, which for a flying warship, is important. The same construction is used on Koloss.
Apart from Mitter's compliment of MG08 and skeletonized Maxim MG05, Mitter has four special 15mm versions of Boys Mk-1 anti-armor rifles in the hull and command gondola to deal with aforementioned frigates. These fire a mixed load of steel core AP and HEIAP to set ships ablaze. We would love to equip Solothurn S18 for better anti armor performance but the S18 are too heavy, and only Koloss is able to carry them in meaningful numbers.
Further details and views of Mitternacht to come in due time.
