Why would a bird need all of that heavy metal on its body? Its just making the bird slower to react and would tire it out a great deal faster. If the bird knows an attack is coming it has time to dodge out of the way. With all that weight its so much easier to hit as its slower to react and the vast majority of its body (wings) are entirely unprotected.
