The main inhabitants of the world of Phantolandia are these creatures known as just simply monsters. They consist mainly of all types of creatures from regular animals, to mythological beings such as centaurs, mermaids, and gryphons, to even the undead and inanimate. They were created by the long extinct race remembered as "The Ancients" who used the power of imagination in this dream world to take an "idea" and form the world's matter from the ground to the water, to the air, in a similar manner to alchemy, and give it form.
Monsters are in essence, creatures of fantasy, imagination, the heart, and magic. An idea given life, and becoming its own individual. Monsters do not bleed when they're cut or damaged, rather they crack and crumble into sparkles of light that fade to shadow, and they even lose their color once they die, before fading back into the dust of the earth.
They don't have much of a physical existence either, they can't feel anything soft or hard, nor painful or soothing. Instead having a more emotional existence in that the emotional intent or interest effects them. To explain it the best way, a punch wouldn't harm them for the force, but rather for the intent of harm, which would fracture their soul, and therefore their vessel receives damage, meanwhile a hug wouldn't full on rejuvenate them like a healing spell would. Extreme emotions especially effect them more than they do to us, with positive ones healing and curing them of sickness, while depression and anxiety actually are sickness to them. In fact, it is very possible for a monster to be so distraught and hopeless, that they simply lose the will to live, and pass away on the spot.
Perhaps one of the most important part of the monsters is magic. Being made of magic, it's no surprise they possess such power themselves. It requires the use of the mind, from experience, to wisdom, to imagination, and it takes until adulthood for a monster to start casting their first spells, with the process being their coming of age. How magic works is very personalized for them too, as they can only use spells and abilities that depend on their personality and who they are. A hotheaded beast may have explosive fire magic, while a critter with their head in the clouds might have the power to levitate things. Magic is seen by the monsters as an art form.
Otherwise, monsters have their own mannerisms, behaviors, and peculiar way they act compared to us. Mainly they replace "human" sounding words and phrases with more creature type ones, such saying "on the other claw...", "working my tail off!", "Oh! The monstrosity!", "Is everycritter ready?", and so on. They speak their own language that mainly consists of growls, hisses, screeches, and other animal noises that vary in accents that come from the limitations of their speech, as well as being the kind of imaginary language that somehow everyone can understand, and they can understand us if they heard our language. There's even other silly things, such as how they associate eating and romance together, teasing about how "tasty" somecritter looks, or how "you like such a prey~", or how they're not as uncomfortable with nudity as we are, viewing clothes more as an accessory, like dressing up a doll.
The ancients left them behind when they went extinct, expecting them to thrive better than they did, but with the world of Phantolandia being a husk of what it once was, it seems the monsters themselves are no different from their creators.
