Background :
Lalundas, or Lalu as she tended to go by, was always a-bit odd for a Teladi. While most of her species were highly financially motivated and driven to seek "Profitsssss", Lalu's interests were directed more towards the sciences and engineering. This is not to say that Lalu had no skill in her species' profits focused mindset, though. While she was lacking in the areas of haggling and maximizing profits at all costs, she made up for those deficiencies with a professional demeanor and truthful reliability. Her profits were not massive by any stretch, but they were enough to get her the education she actually wanted.
Her education included nearly everything that could be considered to be attached to starships. Astrophysics, Metallurgy, FTL Theory and Application, Atmospheric and Fluid Dynamics, Theoretical Gravitic Technology... Anything that could be involved with the construction of starships and their operation was something that Lalu would study.
Years later and with an impressive list of degrees to her name, Lalu shifted into a new business as a dealer of customized starships and purveyor of starship enhancements. People could come to her to install upgrades she had come up with on their starships for premium prices or they could purchase starships that she herself had purchased and installed experimental technology on. While experimental technology would normally be something that may drive buyers away, Lalu had earned a reputation for herself of being someone that could be trusted to NOT cut corners or trick customers into purchasing a substandard product.
While her client base was not particularly large, Lalu was once again able to make a comfortable and tidy profit and over time her reputation grew to be that among those who were looking for highly customized starships with top tier performance, she was very much the person to go to. In addition, she was also well regarded in academic circles for her work on theoretical starship technology and her willingness and drive to turn theoretical into practical.
One repeat acquaintance over the years was a Walking Wake that always gave off an odd air of being far older than she appeared to be. But she was friendly and personable and was highly supportive of Lalu's innovative experiments. Often bouncing ideas around with the Teladi and occasionally offering financial support to go down particularly unusual and innovative paths that did not look like they could have a profitable application. The two became good friends over these years, but Lalu always felt like there was *something* that was being left unspoken between the two...
Thanks to these two sides of her reputation, Lalu one day was surprised to see an ancient, beat-up, barely holding together starship land outside her shop and a scrappy Lombax shorter even than herself walk in. First impressions were quickly dashed, however, as this Lombax named Axelia quickly proved herself to be a highly knowledgeable mechanic. Which in hindsight Lalu decided she should have figured out given that that ship that looked like it shouldn't be able to fly had actually managed to get there.
Axelia wanted to not purchase a starship, but make a trade for one. And before Lalu could point out that the ship Axelia had arrived in might be able to match one piece of equipment on a new starship, the Lombax quickly pulled out a softly glowing yellow gem. Lalu was confused, but also intrigued and accepted Axelia's offer to examine it. What Lalu found only amplified both her confusion and intrigued curiosity. This gem was putting out a constant and gentle field of energy but had within it so much energy that the Teladi was concerned it may have burned out the sensors she had used.
The Lombax explained that a scavenger friend of hers had happened across the gem in a wreck that had been drifting for easily 3,000 years or more and as far as she could tell, the ship had crashed into the gem while traveling at high speed. The fact that the gem was in one piece still was the first hint there was something odd about it. Then there was that soft glow that encouraged Axelia to examine it more closely and discover the power contained inside it. Recognizing the possibilities and recalling the stories she had heard about Lalu and her interests in theoretical research, she figured she could make a trade.
Lalu could not deny... Axelia was right. She was indeed extremely interested in this curious little gem. But trading an entire starship for a gem... Even without being super profit minded, this was a large ask. Thinking it over, Lalu managed to come up with a solution that would work for her. She would give Axelia one of her best starships complete with an advanced shipboard AI in exchange for the gem. But Axelia would have to agree to become a beta tester of sorts for her experiments. There were not many independent starship captains willing to risk having experimental technology on board especially if it was plugged into critical systems, so having someone who could be relied on to always test her experiments had a long-term profit potential even if the sunk cost here at the start would be high.
To her delight and relief, Axelia agreed. Not only agreed, but enthusiastically agreed. The Lombax was actually eager to try out this experimental technology that Lalu came up with! She actually rather reminded Lalu of her old Walking Wake friend with this embrace of innovative and experimental technologies and approaches...
The trade complete and agreements made for Axelia to return regularly every few months to report on the results of the experiments and to install new ones, the Lombax left to return to her own work as a wandering mechanic and engineer for hire.
Over the next several years, Lalu began to experiment with and study this odd, glowing, yellow gem along with her normal starship tech experiments. Her mind was abuzz with so many possible applications of so powerful and so small a source of power. But at the same time, she was just as curious about how this gem could even exist as it was quite literally breaking several 'laws' of physics, thermodynamics, relativity... This gem should not exist.
Her Walking Wake friend came to visit some time after Lalu obtained the gem and while Lalu did not catch her reaction, the Walking Wake immediately recognized the gem for what it was. A Shard. She knew this because she was in fact the retired Goddess of Innovation and had been around for nearly as long as Iridalea herself. She chose not to reveal either of these truths to Lalu, but did make sure to start visiting more often to see what the Teladi would learn of the Shard and how she may use it. Shards being so incredibly rare to come across, she was just as curious as Lalu.
Knowing that rumors about the gem would spread and recognizing the... creative approaches to securing profits her species had, Lalu kept the gem on her person at all times as a seemingly normal piece of jewelry on her sash. As the months and years passed, however, Lalu had noticed some unusual things... She never really felt tired anymore and she both felt and was healthier than she had ever been. But the strangest thing was that over time she began to feel like her normal outfits just didn't fit quite right anymore. Oddly tight all over, but especially around the chest. It was only when she finally checked a-few years and some outfits later that she could deny it no longer that she was slightly taller and, for some odd reason, bustier as well. Not by a great degree, but she had long since reached the age where she should not have grown anymore.
It was not long after this revelation and recognition that she could not deny that she was for some reason slightly bigger than she had been a-few years ago that Axelia came back and showed off an impressive new upgrade to her multitool. She had found another of those gems out in the middle of nowhere in space and had decided to attach it to her multitool as a power source. Strangely, this had for some reason made it so that her multitool could reshape itself with only a thought from Axelia. But even more strange and unexpected was what it did to Axelia...
With a wide grin, Axelia demonstrated that with the multitool and thus the gem in hand, she could grow and shrink her entire body (and certain parts of her body) and explained that she hadn't really found a limit yet despite shrinking herself small enough to work on a computer's internal circuit boards and large enough to stuff planets in her cleavage.
While Lalu tried to recover from this news with Axelia looming over twice her height, another surprise slithered into the shop as NOODL entered. The shipboard AI was not on the ship anymore and had a physical body somehow and Lalu couldn't decide what was the strangest part of her story between Axelia accidentally unshackling NOODL when trying to change her alarm clock's music and the rumored new Absol Goddess, Ynaa, showing up and creating an actual physical body for the AI. Moving forward, she would have a great many questions for NOODL over her new existence and every time Axelia returned to report on the results of the experimental tech, NOODL could also expect to talk with the Teladi for hours.
Despite the surprises, Lalu was more intrigued than ever about the yellow gem that even now was attached to her sash. She had more questions than ever about it, but now she had some answers too... Axelia's size changing clearly suggested that the reason for her own slightly larger size over the years was almost certainly because of the gem. Could she change her own size too if she tried? Questions to explore and experiment with, but what was not a question at all was that Lalu was truly excited for the future of her work and the discoveries to be made.
And there's Lalu's lore post!
She ended up being one of those characters that moves from idea to completion really darn fast XD
A Teladi character has been something in the back of my mind for a-couple years now, but then had the idea for Lalu here specifically while I was writing up my year in review in late December... Think it was a week or two later that she was drawn and then the lore really started building up ^^
Actually really happy with her!
And yes it's true Teladi in the games don't have boobs, but Pokemon generally aren't anthro so there XD
~ More of Lalundas the sometimes unusually large Teladi ~
As always, questions, comments, thoughts, suggestions, and critiques are welcome!
