Dekinai Katari, the mysterious latex geisha that resides inside of a special mask, is more than just a strange spirit bound to an odd article of clothing. Over the years, I have done some research into the vessel containing my good friend, tracing its origins back to when it was created shortly after World War II. During this turbulent time, the concept of the geisha was in turmoil, following two different directions to either modernize the geisha to appeal to Westerners or to keep in the old ways as is tradition. While the latter view eventually won out, laws protecting women from being taken at a young age to be trained up in the ways of the geisha caused their numbers to begin to decline, until they became an endangered profession.
It appears, during this decline, especially as more and more geisha were aged out while also experiencing harassment from Western tourists who saw them as mere sex workers, that an enterprising young enchanter skilled in applying magic to latex and rubber wanted to preserve this fascinating ideal of a woman as well as the history and tradition involved, and channel it into a single item. To that end, he sought after a kami associated with the geisha, scouring Kyoto for such a creature, until he was able to locate it and bind it with his magic, an act considered profane by Shinto beliefs. This spirit was forced into the mask, but proved stronger than previously thought, and thus was seen as a failure.
Katari herself was not aware of her origins, being a construct of magic, essentially programmed with the knowledge and skills of being a geisha, and yet, it explains how she can be so kind and yet so commanding, as she possesses the multiple souls of a kami that give her facets of her personality. It is unknown how she might be able to commune with the being residing inside of her, or even if she and that entity are one and the same, but for now, she remains dedicated to helping others and proving that she is no mere commodity to be manufactured.
Thanks to
