Anton, Call Center - Claim Number 1566783 - Flinters
Flinters "I wonder what his insurance premiums are like."Spend enough time in your second life with a robot body and you start to have a different perspective when it comes to injury. There's no longer any physical pain when your body sustains damage. Your soul of course feels that your acclimatized physical form has become damaged, but this is more of an uncomfortable or uneasy feeling. Not a painful one. This is in addition to your bodies internal diagnostics notifying you of problems.
What one might describe as "pain" only happens after one goes to sleep and their soul begins acclimatizing. Either to new parts or the new condition of their body. Acclimatization is different for everyone. Some do describe it as painful, others describe it as feeling sick or severely uncomfortable. Some people can power through it and consider it a minor inconvenience. For others it is severely debilitating and they take efforts to minimize how much of it they have to endure. Some people acclimatize quickly, others take much longer. Anton is somewhere in the middle when it comes to acclimatization. It's not a cakewalk, but it's not something he is unduly afraid of either.
As we see here, Anton is not bothered in the slightest about being reduced to a battered disembodied head, wired up to a car battery for power. His Schafer Bodyworks chassis is built to take damage and keep working. Upon regaining power, what's left of Anton's body powers up and determines what components still work and what doesn't, isolating the good from the bad. Determining it is safe to do so, his body powers up his brain.
Anton takes a moment to wake up and gain his bearings. He can feel that much of him is missing, the diagnostic messages merely confirming it. He ignores most of them and checks the diagnostics for his brain case. It's undamaged, good. Moving on, he finds his left ear and eye aren't working. His right eye is, but it's jammed in place, leaving him unable to look around. He knows he won the bet, but doesn't remember the crash that clearly happened right after. Suddenly loosing power caused those memories to be lost, that's perfectly normal. He starts to pay attention to his remaining ear and radio. His VI (Virtual Intelligence) servants are asking him if he is okay. The mental haze finally dissipating, he responds to them that he is.
Anton confirms that his VIs have the cleanup from the accident under control and then chats with his friends. They're sharing videos of the crash and photos of his present condition with him. They're of course also busy taking photos of themselves with Anton. All in good fun of course. Once all the congratulations and talk has ran its course, Anton then turns his attention to making a phone call. He needs to call Schafer Bodyworks customer service and have a new body assembled and shipped ASAP. He has a couple complete spare chassis at home for these sort of situations, but it's always a good to get the replacement for the replacement ordered as soon as you know you need it.
An hour or so later, with the call to Schafer Bodyworks finished and his friends having said goodbye, there's not much else for Anton to do. Normally he could have his vase chassis carried about by his VI's, but he is currently in no shape to be moved while powered on. After sending a message to his wife to let him know he's fine, he checks in with his VIs again to make sure everything is in order. After confirming their plans, Anton turns himself off. The world goes dark and quiet as his body gracefully shuts down his brain. There won't be any memory loss from this shutdown as Anton feels himself slowly drifting into unconsciousness.
Now fully powered off, Anton's VIs disconnect him from the car battery and carefully place his head into a padded bag for safe keeping. The rest of him has been swept up into a few boxes and will be brought home to see if any parts can be salvaged. His racecar is similarly recovered and put on a trailer for repair later. Once home, Anton's brain case will be installed in a new body within an hour or so.
There are many things to miss about your first life organic body, but having a robot body has its perks as well. The most obvious one is injuries. Even full decapitation is just a temporary inconvenience. Your friends or VIs will quickly recover the part of your body that contains your brain case. They'll get you powered up with whatever is handy in no time. Make sure to get a repair appointment setup before you have them take whatever is left of you home. Sure the acclimatization to the new parts will be rough, but after that's done you'll be good as new.

A person's organic brain is converted to synthetic neurons when a person is old and in declining health. Their soul is bound to their body and, as their organic body dies, becomes bound to the now synthetic brain. The synthetic neurons operate with electricity and are maintained by micro machines. They don't degrade when power is removed. The synthetic brain is merely the vessel that their soul is bound to and the means by which their immaterial consciousness interacts with the physical world. So even if the brain case is completely smashed and smeared all over the pavement, you can get a person back by scooping up all that brain matter and reconstruct the brain in the proper lab environment. It's not recommended to rely on that though and it's not a fast process anyway. Ones body getting completely destroyed is fine, just make sure the brain case stays intact. Fixing broken chassis is easy. Fixing broken brain cases is much more time consuming.
The bodies themselves are your "typical" cybernetic bodies of metal, rubber, synthetic skin, and plastic. Their eyes are cameras, their ears are microphones, synthetic skin provides detailed touch sensitivity, etc. A persons soul gradually becomes "Acclimatized" to their physical form, granting them the ability to feel every component of their body, even those without touch sensitivity. So you'll have synthetic skin on hands, feet, and face, but the rest of their exterior is just metal, plastic, and rubber. Relying on being acclimatized for touch sensitivity on those parts of their body. Any parts being replaced will trigger fresh acclimatization to those parts. Acclimatization isn't "painful", but it can be extremely tiring and uncomfortable. It varies from person to person.
The one big limitation is that of batteries. Battery technology isn't that much improved in their universe. So regular recharging and/or external battery packs and/or fuel cells are an everyday reality. Fusion power exists, but not small enough for an individuals body.
