Once, the Lamenter's River was beautiful. When dawn's first light shone upon the river, its waters gleamed a gentle gold and shimmered like a blessing laid upon the land. To no one's surprise, such a sight earned the reverence of those of Eostra, who fabled the river was spun from the Goddess' blood herself. They whispered that as She tore her own body asunder to shape the towering mountains and vast oceans, the thick rivulets of blood that wept from her wounds became the largest river to stretch across the land— The Oriannis River. Or, so the tale seemingly goes.
However, that beauty belongs to another time now. A distant past, unsullied and untouched.
Now, its waters are dark and its resentful current violent. Forgotten bones and lost souls linger beneath its murky surface. It has become a dreadful, terrifying place by no fault of its own. And yet, this was where she was born. Its waters, however toxic now, cannot hurt her.
Asra only regrets that she was born too late to save those who came before. Perhaps it's fitting, however, that death was born only from suffering.

Sooo I actually struggled a bit with the story if only because there's so much lore I could sort of yap away about from this single picture lol. As to not type a whole document, and to give myself an excuse to get more art of similar topics, I decided to focus on just a single aspect for now! Annnnd that is introducing this peculiar river!
The Oriannis River (now known as the Lamenter's River) is quite an important place for Asra, since it's technically 'where she was born'. As described, once, it was really beautiful. Now, however? It is an absolutely cursed and dreadful place lol. Like, literally, trying to cross it is downright deadly at times. And if you accidentally swallow some water from it, you'll prooobably die lol. I'd imagine having a bunch of dead bodies soaking in a river like some type of cursed soup would probably make the water super... not good?
But Dest, why did this happen to the river? And what's with the glowy flowers we always see around Asra? And the butterflies? In due time, my friends. In due time!
I love this art so, so much. The sheer detail in the background is utterly gorgeous. The artist mentioned they wanted to experiment a bit with my piece and their style (which I was incredibly honored by), and it came out looking so utterly gorgeous. The petals floating atop the water, the way it's a bit more 'lively' around where Asra is, to just how aesthetically pleasing it looks to the eye... Ugh. I could scream my praise for this piece for hours. I love it so darn much!
