The Trade League provided her expensive education, which she's paying back with a period of indentured service to them. The terms of the contract are engraved on her collar, an assurance for both parties that neither side will try to alter the deal unilaterally.
The tabard of the uniform deliberately covers the neck for privacy reasons.
The checkerboard pattern is the distinctive livery of the Trade League, representing the patchwork nature of the guild. The League holds sway over most of the free cities of Primoria, and any serious seaborne trade and transport will be handled by them. Or else.
The League reached the zenith of its power right as it emerged victorious from a (literal and trade) war with its primary competitor, the old Hansa of Kalmar, in the war of 14568. (That is the year 568 by the common reckoning; The Kalmarese simply added 14000 superfluous years to their version of the common chronology because bigger numbers are always more impressive to shareholders.)
