Comic: The Sea Is Calling (Page 13)

The Chieftain sets his mug down after taking a long, introspective sip. He lets out a satisfied, throaty sigh before beginning to tell a tale, “There's a beast that roams the sea. We call 'em the Cobalt Serpent.” Immediately, The Lands Trio’s collective ears perked up. It sounded preposterous, something merely spoken about in folk tales. Zenchi seemed to share this line of thinking, “The Cobalt Serpent? You mean the creature from fairytales?” While amused at the concept of it being a mere fantasy, Xander knew better than anyone that it was much more than that, “Hah, it's no fairytale. It's like nothin' you've ever seen before. It's...bloodthirsty, mad, with a Heart full o' hatred.” This left Ithaca quite puzzled, even a tad bit concerned at the thought of a ferocious beast. One could hear her utter a soft whimper, showing the fear that she held. She turned to her friend for a second opinion, “Chi-Chi, a sea monster? What do you think?” The dragon hero leaned on her arms, interlacing her fingers while thinking aloud. She’d seen many bizarre happenings throughout her life, but this may be the most unbelievable of them all, “I'll be damned. I'd heard tall tales about a cursed beast that prowls the sea, but I didn't think it was the truth.”
“So you wish to recruit us to help eliminate the serpent.” Roseland asked the Chieftain bluntly, leaving no further room for interpretation. This is precisely what months of adventure had led up to. A massive, hulking serpent that claimed the Cobalt Sea as its own kingdom, shredding through unlucky sailors and leaving a long trail of bloodshed in its wake. Few had lived to tell the tale of the Cobalt Serpent, with even the most hardened of sailors being no match for its destructive presence, Xander explained, “Aye. It's terrorized the Cobalt Sea for too long. We Outriders 'ave been fightin' 'em for generations.” Such is the true destiny of the Outriders. It has been their lifelong mission to slay the serpent and bring peace back to the waters. Not a single soul knows the sea better than the Outriders, leaving them no choice but to take up the burden of taking the fight to the serpent. Whilst explaining the history of the Outriders, Xander has a tragic confession to make, “We've lost countless ships and men tryin' to take 'em down. I...cannae bear to lose anymore. That's why I need you three to end this once and for all.” Even the strongest soldiers reach a point in their life where even they question if what they’re doing is the right thing. They question if their goals and missions are even remotely within the realms of possibility. This long-standing rivalry between the Outriders and the serpent has always placed an immense burden on the Chieftain. It is up to him to lead the charge against the monster. Any doubts or fears must be cast aside to achieve the betterment of those at sea. After thinking for but a brief moment, Zenchi declares with an electrified clasp of her hands, “We'll do it.” If it were any other group of fighters or aspiring heroes, they would likely falter in the face of such adversity, but not Zenchi, not Ithaca, not Roseland. Xander, knowing full well the dangers to come, asks her once more, “Are ye sure lassies? This'll be no easy feat.” Roseland sat up in her chair, nonchalantly crossing her legs while waving her dark hair. Like the determined fighter she is, she too declared, “We'll find a way to succeed.” With the decision made unanimously, their fates were now conjoined. A partnership that had once before thought impossible was now a reality. The Lands Trio join arms with the Outriders to settle the score between their home and the murderous, rampaging serpent.
