Leo turned toward Emily and Steven’s call. They were standing next to each other — unusually close. Steven had almost wrapped an arm around Emily’s waist, trying to share this moment with her, still not fully understanding what was happening.
They didn’t know why Leo had decided to leave, or where he was going. Judging by his expression, he didn’t fully understand it himself. He was torn between the urge to stay with the close, familiar friends he cherished… and the pull of Alyx’s persuasion, leading him into the unknown. Toward a spirit that wasn’t even fully real in the human world. Toward a ghost of hope.
His legs almost refused to move, and a strange weakness spread through his hands.
He cast one last, long look into Emily’s eyes — silently asking for forgiveness and hoping they’d still get another chance to meet. That they’d see each other again as if none of this had ever happened. As if they’d parted only yesterday. And that the warmth of trust built between them through all the time and adventures they shared would remain untouched.
He tried to memorize every tiny feature of their faces, greedily studying every detail of their silhouettes, fighting back the sting of tears. He hated goodbyes. He always tried to detach, to pretend it had never happened — only hurting himself and those who cared about him even more.
Squeezing his eyes shut for a long moment, feeling a tear slide down his cheek, he turned toward the cat without opening them. She understood him now better than anyone else. Her life had held a thousand times more farewells than any living being could bear.
And he ran toward her, trying to catch up. Trying to leave all the heavy thoughts behind. Hoping fate would grant them at least one more good minute together.
