GIFT: Beyond a Charmbound Sky by Azakir Devaris
posted 14 years ago Increasingly feathered dragon | Support me with Shinies!
--THIS IS NOT MY WORK, IT WAS A GIFT--
The story is by Azakir Devaris (Randomlurker on DA http://randomlurker.deviantart.com/). Go give them some love!
The original submission is here: (http://randomlurker.deviantart.com/gallery/25830355), so if you want to comment or fave please do it there too!
I posted a journal about this a bit back when it first came to light, but it deserves exposure so I'm posting it here too.
A while ago, Azakir, a very special dragon to me, and I decided it would be awfully fun to attempt a different sort of art trade. While he doesn't draw so much, he is a writer, so we got the idea that I would draw a character for him, and he would write a story inspired by my drawing, exploring who that character was.
My contribution was a drawing of a dragon with the name 'Idrin Starpaw,' which is posted here: (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1906173/).
Azakir's contribution is the document linked here. I was expecting a short story of some sort. Instead his inspiration was such that he came back to me a while later with this, a full length novel not only creating and exploring the character I helped create, but introducing a rich and vivid world with a detailed and heart-wrenching history. It is a tale of bright and noble dragons seeking to survive in a post-apocalyptic world left barren by a terrible mistake. It is a tale of one young dragon's confused vision and boundless hope. And it is a tale of another dragon's warmth and willingness to trust in the impossible, all in the fleeting hope that somehow, there might be a way to save all that they know and love.
I know that the way most of us use the internet and particularly art gallery sites like this, attention spans are brief and even the shortest of stories tend to get passed over as people are uninterested in investing the time required to read it. This story here however is a deeply personal and special thing to me, and in my humble (but correct) opinion, a beautiful tale that is very much worth the decision to set aside a little bit of time over the next couple days to read.
I gave Azakir a drawing. He gave me an entire world.
