My birthday art for this year, a little bit early. I'm manifesting some new rattie friends via my art!

I've made it one of my missions for 2026 to get rats again. Our last old man rat passed away back in 2022 and after that we were focused on a move into a rental house. Bad news was our lease stated no pets...but good news is our landlady is super nice and I finally worked up the courage to ask her if she would mind if I had rats. She said as long as they lived in a cage she was fine with it, so now that I'm in the clear I'm ready to make it happen. I will have to do some prep work first, and find a good vet as well as either a breeder or a rescue, so it will be a few months most likely but I'm hoping by summer I can at least have a spot ready and rats on the way.

That’s the cage I’ve got, it’s a good one! I have to dig mine out of the garage and clean it up but I’m excited to build a nice cozy life for some rats again. I’ve missed having them around!
You’re going to have your hands full but you won’t notice, you’ll be too busy falling in love. They’re extra cute when they first open their eyes! ^.^

A pied piper Wolflet. I just learned that rats can live more than 7 years; that's a commitment!
Most rats live about 2 - 2.5 years, 3 if you're lucky. Anything beyond that is pushing it, similar to a human being over 100. 7 years is...crazy. lol Probably why he's in the Guieness Book of World Records though!
My sister had one live to about 4, but my oldest has been about 2.5.

I remember reading this in an actual book-copy of Guinness World Records from years ago, but I checked to see if it still held and the oldest guinea-piggu was named Snowball, who lived for 14 YEARS AND 10.5 MONTHS. And even crazier, this has been the official record for DECADES, with Snowball dying in 1979!

This is soooo cute. I love the pose, as well as the little gathering of rats around the bottom. They are listening so attentively 💙 My husband and I got our first rats in December. I've had gerbils for the longest time, but since our dog died in April last year I've been so lonely. I've heard so many good things about rats (as well as the cons). Last night was their first night in their Critter Nation after a long quarantine and bonding period. I hope they will love having me as a mom ;-; I'm so glad your landlord said yes to rats! Im sending much love and luck towards you for new, cute rat babies soon!
Aww, thank you so much and same to you! I've had rats on and off since 6th grade, I have had other pets but I always come back to the rats. They are very forgiving creatures so don't worry about being the best pet parent while you're learning. You have access to a lot of good info now with the internet, back in the 90's and early 00's there wasn't any of that. My best piece of advice: "trash" makes great rat toys. Cardboard boxes, toilet paper tubes stuffed with fun things, paper stuff they can rip up (they love to shred things). ^.^
