He refused to protect himself... - OC Art
Was playing around and ended up with this collage thingy!
The text on the left is lyrics from the song Nettles by Ethel Cain, and could apply to either character depicted.
The fullbody art on the right is a redraw of a painting titled "A Huguenot, on St. Bartholomew's Day, Refusing to Shield Himself from Danger by Wearing the Roman Catholic Badge" from 1851.
The OG painting depicts a couple on the saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre in August of 1572 in France. All Catholics were told to wear a white armband and a white cross on their caps so that they would be spared, and all Protestants would be killed. The pair depicted is a cross-faith couple, the woman is trying to protect her lover and he is gently refusing while staring into her pleading face.
In my reimagined version of the painting, I imagine the backstory is similar but not Christian in nature lol. Moonbeam (the dark-haired woman with the blue armband) is trying to protect her lover, Pain, (white-haired man with the eyepatch) and he's refusing. Moonbeam isn't safe, herself, but she's still trying to protect him. Instead, Pain wants to stand beside his lover and fight. But this crushes Moonbeam. She can't handle losing someone else when she feels personally and single-handedly responsible for their safety... So she takes up arms and stubbornly declares that she will protect him.
Moonbeam belongs to my friend. Pain is my OC.
And this is an AU that is very divorced from their usual 'canon' depictions.
