It's definitely interesting to watch as a point on the Hideaki Anno Chronology between "melting fetal god-monster in Nausicaa" and "everything that happens in EVA." Lower-key than either, but you can spot some points of continuity even without the meta part where it's the show that induced the breakdown that led to the other show...
