Kobolds are distantly related to dragons much like a Monkey or an Ape to Humans and are commonly kept as pets fulfilling a similar niche as Domestic cats.
In the wild Kobolds are small social pack hunters. Individually they are not very strong but their true strength comes in numbers. Their magical ability means that they are able to cumulate their shared strength so each individual Kobold's bites and scratches while dealing little damage alone suddenly feels like being scratched by multiple Kobolds at the same time, to ward away potential predators or take down animals more than twice their size. They are also known for their quickness and have fast reflexes to escape or deliver rapid strikes. Their power of teamwork is also not strictly limited to combat or their own species. They have been able to bond with and extend their power to dragons who they have bonded with, and this can be used to help sooth each other and destress during grooming and bonding times.
As pets they are much smaller that dragons so they don't take up too much space in a household and can get rid of small pests and parasites that may have gotten into a dragon's scales. They have good temperament, like to be groomed, and are able to understand dragon moods and respond to them especially to relieve stress. They are keenly aware of danger and can warn dragons ahead of time if they hear something dragons can't. Above all Dragons tend to like them for their cuteness and distinct personalities.
