The Xerathani are a descendant of one of the original 8 Dragon species of Laramidia and Appalachia. They and another dragon are both divergent species of dragons who embodied Sky, Wind, Air, and Sound.
The Xerathani are now the most common and populous Dragons of the Appalachian Continent but they prefer to live in high places relegating them mainly to the mountains and floating sky cities. At full grown height they are about 2-3 times as tall as the average Tannin, and have a physical ability to spit a sticky rubber-like substance from their front fangs. The Substance is not naturally toxic and is mainly used to trap prey or restrain enemies but it can also be secreted and used for crafting. Their Sails and Wings also act as a sensory organ allowing them to pick up information such as movement and vibration from the air.
They also have a magical ability which comes from their voices, allowing them to create concussive bursts of force that can send someone flying, cause changes in the weather, or create auditory hallucinations among many other effects, depending on the sounds they produce but the practice of their Auditory Magic has fallen out of common knowledge because of a dark age in their history where the tradition failed to be passed on and became forgotten, now there are hardly any Xerathani who know of their history before the dark ages which was done with intention in order to control the population. Singing is now now also restricted with the superstition that it is evil Witchcraft
Xerathani now rely on an external magic using crystal piercings that are given to them by a priest in a coming of age ritual. Not all temples are exactly the same and may have different practices and restrictions on who is allowed to have power meaning not all Xerathani are given magic, for some they believe it should be exclusive. Others believe that all members of their community deserve to have power, but will be particular about what power they are allowed to have such as in cold climates they won't let their young ones have an Ice power.
The ritual occurs by giving the child a crystal piercing somewhere on their scales, then they are welcomed into a chamber with Crystal lined stained glass and expose their Crystal to the light created by the window. The Piercing allows them to absorb the magic from that light and gives them a limited form of Elemental Power not quite the same as Tannin, but they can create charged gusts of wind from their wings and their "Rubber Spit" gains the same sort of elemental effect: Shimmering, Vacuuming, Growing, Freezing, Shrouding, Petrifying, Confusing, and Burning
