The ice witch, Freya, was a student and devotee of lord Winterbolt. When she learned of the death of Winterbolt, she vowed revenge on all of those responsible, especially Rudolph, the keeper of the beacon of Boreal.
She saw her chance with a migrating family of reindeer, heading towards Christmastown. She convinced one of Winterbolt’s ice dragons to attack the family, except for the young male. The dragon succeeded in killing the young reindeer’s parents, before Freya betrayed the beast and killed it.
She then took the form of lady Boreal herself in an illusion spell, and comforted the grieving young reindeer, named Fritz, before taking him in as her own. It was then she worked to replicate Lady Boreal’s light magic as best she could, experimenting on young Fritz, and encouraging him to try out any new abilities that might have manifested.
The results were not quite what Freya had expected, but still agreeable. Fritz, who had now re-christened himself as Faust (A name taken from one of her old books) indeed had developed his own beacon on his nose, this one a brilliant dark violet as opposed to red. Unfortunately, he could never cause his beacon to glow as well as Rudolph’s, but he developed another side effect: telekinesis. With the power of his nose and his antlers combined, Faust could make objects move with the sheer force of his will.
Freya was overjoyed, and told Faust to continue honing his skills, in any way he could. She forbade him, however, from going into Christmastown under any circumstances. Faust was always the obedient type, and listened to her…at first.
It was as Faust was practicing his telekinesis, mainly flinging icicles and rocks at homemade targets, that something happened. Something that Freya had never dreamed would happen. He heard something coming from the distance, from Christmastown…
Music…
He’d never heard music before, outside of the songs his mother would hum and sing to him. Freya was never really impressed by it, and preferred the silence and solace of her caverns. Faust, on the other hand, was deeply moved by what he’d heard. He wanted to hear more. He’d sneak out of his cavern on certain nights, listening to the elves, the reindeer, and the other inhabitants of Christmastown playing and singing whatever they could.
At one point, he was no longer content to just listen. Music was now starting to form in his mind, and he wanted to create it. He used his new powers to assist him in this. Using what he learned from more books he swiped from Freya’s study, he managed to assemble a grand pipe organ in a secret chamber.
Before he could even play a note, however, he was found out and confronted by Freya. She demanded to know why he was wasting his power on such frivolous things, only to wind up being questioned by Faust incessantly. He questioned her motivations, her reason for even giving him these powers, still thinking Freya was Lady Boreal.
It was at this point that her facade completely slipped. All the questioning frustrated her to the point of no return. She revealed her true identity to Faust, proclaiming him to be a failure. She declared that she would kill him, and start anew with another young buck.
The ensuing clash was fierce, and Faust nearly died against his more experienced opponent. However, he was able to activate the pipe organ with his power, and mustered his mind to create a fierce and pounding melody on the massive instrument. So fierce, in fact, that he was able to literally blow Freya away, into nothingness.
It was done. Freya was gone. He was alone. That was how it needed to be.
To this day, Faust can be heard playing away in his caverns, always composing new tunes in his mind. Freya had tried to freeze his heart over the years, and she’d nearly succeeded. His heart may never fully melt, but as long as he keeps to his passion, and watches over the town that inspired him, he will never be taken by Winterbolt’s awful legacy.
He keeps to himself, not just because of his lack of social experience, but also because of the instability of his powers. His mind needs to be calm and focused at all times for his telekinesis to work at its full potential. If he’s overcome by too much anger or anxiety, he will lose control of this power, and inadvertently hurt someone in the process.
Deep down, Faust does want to be part of life in Christmastown. He’s just not sure how to obtain this goal at the moment.
