While the resin was still wet and sticky, the lid was placed on the sarcophagus. The sarcophagus was held together tightly while the resin dried until the resin fused the two pieces together permanently. The two pieces fit so perfectly and the resin was so strong that almost everyone who examined it over the centuries believed the sarcophagus was carved as a single piece. None knew of the immortal jackal permanently encased inside their tiny tomb.

The jackal enjoyed the millennia. Something in them told them that this was the best fate for a jackal, forever squeezed and immobilized in an eternal silent darkness. They'd probably cheer if their body wasn't squeezed and their mouth held firmly shut. They felt permanently mummified inside a sarcophagus was the proper fate for every jackal.

Now the people that mummified the jackal were on the hunt for their next target. They still had more sarcophaguses than they could count and they were determined to fill them all.
