The next day, with the nanites cargo scanner done, we started to continue working on a large project of ours.
This weapon was commissioned by Commander Oocheto herself, referred to as Project Q.U.A.S.A.R.*
Also known as The Quantum. Uranium. Accelerator. Small. Augmented. Ray. weapon system.*
This weapon is truly one of a kind though it took a lot of trial and error to even make it possible and even with that, it still has significant flaws, It can only hold a maximum of 3 shots before needing to be recharged.
I am no scientist, I'm just the guy that that tests the weapons but based off of what I can get out of it, it's absolutely devastating which is the kind of weapon I like.
Rena explains that this weapon in particular is quite complex. It's a combination of electric magnetic fielding mixed with high concentration of radioactive particles, you can think of it like some kind of laser but instead of light it's very reactive particles from an isotope, I think?
I'm not usually the guy that likes to explain some weird "quantum magic" nonsense, mainly because I have no idea how it even works, but if works as a weapon, then that's all I care about.
Though it was quite a hassle to build, not to mention quite annoying.
For example, this is one of the very few projects that they almost completely disregard my ideas, MY IDEAS!!!
For example, I suggested that we can make the power pack bigger so it has more charge for the electromagnetic conversion or whatever weird technobabble that I don't understand, the result is it will have more than 3 shots.
But both Rena and Nahun said that increase the size of the battery will make the weapon too heavy to wielded by a single Avali, even with a E.H.E.* suit.
*E.H.E. stands for Environmental Hazard Exosuit, This technology allows our kind to explore a large variety of environments off of Avalon, such as a boiling oven world where hydroxylic acid exists as a vapor or as a liquid.
And in case you've skipped your basic chemistry class back on your boiling planet.
Hydroxylic acid Is another name for water, though due to our Ammonia-Based biochemistry, it acts more like a boiling liquid that's faster than lava then something essential for life.
You're welcome for giving some context, monkey brains.
Of course I tried to do this design myself to prove both of them wrong. Unfortunately they were right.
I fell over on my back multiple times by just trying to carry the darn thing even with a E.H.E. suit.
And of course Ni rubbed it in my face, like he always does.
"Ha ha, You fell over like an unbalanced action figure!" Ni said while making a mocking chirp.
"How about you come in here, and try holding this thing yourself, YOU WEAKLING!" I said while looking towards Ni's direction, and hissed.
Fortunately, Nahun stepped in and said "I think that's enough Ni. Remember last time when you dismantled Eeso's ego a little bit too much? He won't do any work for an entire month."
Ni, made an annoyed trill, but at least he stopped making fun of me.
Rena then said for the intercom from the viewing chamber. "Once you're done regaining your balance, let's actually test the design that we've made together."
Annoyed, I clumsily set aside my modified model and grabbed the design that we recently made.
"Fine, but we are wasting an opportunity, to make this weapon more effective than some kind of useless prototype." I said with a annoyed twitter and trill.
This was Mark 5, the previous models before this one had the same problem: they had an odd glitch or malfunction with the electromagnetic conversion or containment field.
The last thing that we want is to have a nuclear bomb detonating on our shoulders, so we ended testing phases on Mark 1 through 4 prematurely so we won't blow up the entire facility.
Mark 3 was where we got extremely close to a nuclear meltdown, with the Q.U.A.S.A.R. weapon system.
It got so bad, to the point that we had to manually override the conversion process by dismantling the prototype.
Hopefully this time it will actually work as it's supposed to.
Utilizing my radio-com in my suit, I signaled Nahun that I'm about to fire the weapon.
Nahun, made a slight nod, and press a button to pull up the intended target, We expect This weapon will fire an extremely hot laser that would melt steel in 2.5 seconds.
The A.D.F. provided us with a reinforced cargo box as a form of target practice for project Q.U.A.S.A.R.
I lined up the sights of the weapon, at the center of the container.
I pulled the trigger, the trigger made a satisfying small click noise, as the weapon started to make an electric whirring sound as its electromagnetic barrel began to spin rapidly.
Ko told me that, once it spins fast enough, it will generate its own electromagnetic current thanks to strong magnets and dense copper wire within the barrel.
It should be enough to make sure that the radioactive particles only go in one direction, not everywhere at once when the isotope is exposed.
It was taking a while for the weapon to actually discharge, and the sound that it was making is giving me a unbearable headache.
Fortunately, 30 seconds later it finally discharged, letting out a very loud continuous crackle noise as it fired on the cargo box. The cargo box instantly heated up and started to melt within a fraction of a second.
Within a half a second later it stopped, the cargo box was reduced to melted rubble.
I was pretty happy with the result, the discharge exceeded our expectations, though the 30-second wait is kind of concerning.
But at least I finally we get to witness the glorious destruction of the target.
"Wow, that was quite a destructive light show." Ko said while making a slight chirp.
"You could say that again" Ni said in agreement.
"Wow, that was quite-" Rena interrupted him before he could finish.
"Please don't. Last time you did that you were saying the same two sentences for 30 minutes straight." Rena said while slightly squinting.
She then turned towards Nahun and asked.
"Did your fancy eye recorded all that, Nahun?"
"You know it." Nahun happily answered with a chirp.
Rena and Nahun then proceed to start hugging and nuzzling each other.
In case you don't understand the social cue, you naked apes,
Hugging and nuzzling is a form of affection like how you like to kiss each other on the cheek or mouth when you like another member of your species.
Sometimes I wish it was me hugging and nuzzling Rena instead of Nahun.
When they were done, they uploaded the video feed to our Nexus* uplink.
*In case you humans live on a distant unheard-of planet, which you obviously do. The Nexus, Is our kinds of equivalent to the internet, minus the AI slop of course, we have over 5 billion Nexus satellites and ships near every planetary body that we've discovered and colonized.
Satisfied with the firing of this weapon. I walked back into the viewing chamber with a sense of pride.
We finally did it, we downsized the G.A.Z.E.R. weapon system into a weapon that can be used by A.D.F. infantry!
I can only imagine absolutely beautiful devastation that we can do with this weapon against the traditionalists... It would be quite glorious indeed!
I spent the rest of my time just imagining their reaction to this weapon, imagine seeing their faces of existential dread when they realize that their evil intentions will never stand against such a potent weapon of destruction.
it's also kind of ironic. Historically, the Traditionalists use the power of the atom bomb to destroy us, the Illumanite, during the Great Civil War, but soon WE will use the same power to make sure that they will never achieve their ambitions... once a war finally breaks out between us, and them.
To celebrate our first functional prototype of project Q.U.A.S.A.R. we wanted to listen to one of our favorite auditory movies*.
*Auditory movies also known as AMVs Is a form of audio-based media, You could think of it like one of those stories that play on the radio stations on your planet, you banana-suckers.
Since our main perception of the world around us is through our hearing visual-based media doesn't usually sit well with us.
The only exception is video games, due to the need for sensory input of what's going on in the game, mainly because audio alone wasn't enough during our kind's first attempts in making a form of interactive media.
Today we're going to be listening to a documentary featuring The story of how we reclaimed The Old Temple, one of the very few ancient structures that predate The Great Civil War.
Historically it was built after we liberated ourselves from the benefactors, The old Temple was originally built to delve into greater mysteries such as material process, welding, and manufacturing.
In other words, this "Temple" was actually The first industrial facility that we Avali built.
Unfortunately during the great Civil War, the true name of the old temple was lost to history and got captured by the traditionalists as they convert it into a military base to build some top secret weaponry such as the first robots.
My personal favorite parts, are the action scenes, depicting a group of Elite Marines fighting against the ancient robots that once guarded the Old Temple.
The documentary also described how these robots were built and what their purpose was, like a automated moving turrets, automated drones that dropped tear gas and mustard gas.
And of course, the biggest automated weapon that used to reside in the old Temple was the first cyber avali model, though this model was built long before the Oracleist even formed.
This model was designed to crush buildings and stomp across the battlefield. Unfortunately its large design made it incapable of flight, not to mention could be easily tripped.
Unfortunately, this cool retelling of a historical story had a boring ending.
It showed how they converted the old temple into a museum, and how we're using the facility to delve into even greater mysteries such as the properties of antimatter.
Not to mention the museum has simple puzzles in order to get through each exhibit, as a form of logic-based entertainment.
Like pulling the right switches in the correct sequence and pushing the box onto a pressure plate.
I wish we had turned it into a combat training facility where we get to fight all kinds of automated weapons.
Oh well, at least we have the Nexus virtual reality technology, to simulate actual combat scenarios with modular training rooms.
Just as the credits started to roll, the nanite TV screen which we usually play video games on, suddenly it came to life on its own.
Of course this is not an unusual occurrence. The higher-ups of the A.D.F. always like to pop in on our devices unannounced.
Though sometimes it can give us quite the startle.
One time we all fell on our backs due to an unexpected call from one of our commissioners.
Commander Oocheto of the Kotati pack, who are well known for interesting and successful military operations throughout the Galaxy.
Oocheto herself is well known to be quite a tactical genius when it comes to the unorthodox. For example, she was able to outmaneuver and even capture an entire fleet of Traditionalist pirates, by pretending to be a civilian fleet by sending out false radio transmissions.
This is even better than completing a complex project, I might be able to convince her to put us back on the elite Marine training program.
All I have to do, is get her attention, and then impress her, It should be easy giving my pack's efficient skill set.
"My commander! Over here! My commander! MY COMMANDER!!!" I said with an excited chirp while flapping my arms/wings around to get her attention.
"Hey Eeso!" Nahun said with a polite, absurdive chirp.
"How about you go, train in the combat simulator to actually show Oocheto, that you're worthy." Nahun said while pointing me towards the hallway that will lead to the training facility that I personally convinced members of the A.D.F. to give me for my own personal use.
"Showing her that I'm still worthy through my actions in the simulator is actually a good idea, and a perfect way to get us back on track to our life goal, why didn't I think of this before? Thanks Nahun!"
I said with a happy twitter as I walked off.
Nahun has again to remind me why I consider him my second in command. He always has the best ideas.
But, since he's my second in command I have the option to ignore his suggestion, after all if Commander Oocheto has something to say about our new weapon Q.U.A.S.A.R. hearing compliments of how useful this weapon can be would be the ultimate reward for our hard work.
"Thank you Nahun, the last time he did that, he did it for three hours straight." Commander Oocheto said with a slightly glad trill.
Rika! They were actually trying to get rid of me! At least I will get to hear about what she thinks about our test results of project Q.U.A.S.A.R.
in the background of the display screen one of Oocheto's packmates then commented "I bet he was going to make a new record of 5 hours straight, rika! He's like the thing that would never shut up when in the presence of a High-Ranking officer, no matter the situation." Commander Oocheto's packmate said with an annoyed coo.
"In case you're wondering Commander, we just finished testing on Mark 5, We are happy to report that this model exceeded our expectations, It melted an entire cargo box made of a steel titanium alloy, The entire structure melted within 0.005 seconds, instead of our estimated 2.5 seconds." Ko explained to our higher Commander.
Commander Oocheto's perked up like she was pleased by the good news.
It is not an exact direct comment acknowledging my greatness, but it's close enough.
But by the look of her face, it seems that a typical weapon's report is not the reason why she called.
"I am glad to hear that project Q.U.A.S.A.R. is reliably operational, but that is not why I called. The reason why I called you is, that we need your expertise elsewhere." Commander Oocheto said with a cold and calm sounding chirp.
My upper ear is pucked up in peak interest, Commander Oocheto, Is basically saying that we're going to be relocated, but to where?
"What do you mean?" Nahun Said with a confused coo, as he narrowed his eyes in confusion.
"Recently one of our scientific vessels, the A.E.F.* Discovery was destroyed when It was sending out a transmission from the Thi'la quadrant*."
*The Avali Exploratory Fleet or A.E.F. Is a part of the Illumanite government that seeks out new resources on distant worlds along with space exploration and star mapping the main reason why we explore outwards is due to our nomadic nature as species.
Though I'd rather that we explore the Galaxy for the glory of the hunt.
*The Thi'la quadrant Is one of 13 sectors that we divide the Galaxy into our maps, each sector is a Three dimensional cylinders that we use for navigation.
These sectors include, Qu'ti, Co'ty, Mi'no, Uk'ra, Sh'eir, Gr'zk, At'nii, Thi'la, Yo'ci, y-ahx'thi, Bi,echo, Kn'ty, and Nil'og. If you want to get very nerdy, the Gr'zk sector is where the supermassive black hole in the center of the Galaxy is located.
Ko who was passively listening while doing some sketches, then looked up with a fearful look on his face and said with a concerned sounding chirp. "How, was the ship destroyed?"
"Based on what they sent before their ultimate demise. They were struck by a nuclear bomb, while they were investigating a very interesting planet that is third from its star. A planet dubbed Sol VI." Commander Oocheto answered with a cold trill with a slight pitch of worry.
My heart almost skipped a beat with excitement, when I heard this because if I remember it correctly, in the articles of A.D.F. engagement, page 200, paragraph 5, If an unarmed vessel from civilian, a scientific ship from the A.E.F. was destroyed through artificial means, and if diplomacy can't be established with the perpetrators responsible, it will be considered an act of war.
Which means the reason why Commander Oocheto is calling us is because she's drafting us for our expertise.
"Head to the hangar B tomorrow, where an AVT-6* Will pick you up." Commander Oocheto ordered In a calm but serious trill
AVT-6, nicknamed White Hurricane, an A.D.F. transport helicopter, designed to go extremely high in the atmosphere, with hyper efficient double propellers located on the sides of the vehicle.*
At last, my dreams of finding in the front lines of a glorious battle are coming true.
I never felt this excited ever since we had joined the elite Marine training program, before we were reassigned to E.W.E.a.D.B.
As I grabbed my things, I overheard my packmates starting to grow very wary.
"A war on a distant planet... I sure hope that we won't go into the front lines." Rena said with a worried squeak.
"Don't worry about it, given our current skill set. There is a good chance, that we will be ending up doing maintenance on military infrastructure." Ko said while clicking In thought.
Really? After all, the boring tasks that we were forced to do in E.W.E.a.D.B., but they still don't want the glory of the hunt?
"Darn. We have to cancel our trip to *ma'ko hills." Nahun said with a sad chirp.
*ma'ko hills isn't a wildlife preserve on Avalon it usually has a large variety of creatures to hunt for sport, though you can only hunt there once a month.
"We might as well start packing up our things, if we take too long. We're never going to hear the end of it." Ko said as he closes his sketchbook.
"Let's just make sure that our local maniac doesn't try to pack his big statue into a suitcase." Ni with a with a smug sounding chirp.
"Oh, come on!" I said out loud in annoyance.
