I recall that in the earlier player guides the depictions of a Wizard showed them to be absolutely ripped.
Intelligence may be the main stat, but nobody said that Strength can't come second. Besides, it's also good to note that a lot of people will try to piece in a Constitution HP bonus because of that low hit die. And that does mean that most Wizards still end up comparitively healthy overall no? And that Belt of Storm Giant Strength doesn't always have to go to the Fighter.

In the books, he has worked out and has the body most professional weight lifters and strength trainers could only dream of, on top of that he knows many spells to increase his strength, speed and so on. But also knows the more regular spells so can cast a fireball capable of besieging fortifications too.
