Everyone has their breaking points, and it seems Sonic the Hedgehog reached his :/ He didn't turn into the next Scourge or start allowing those to die around him... but there are other ways to break. In the official comics he can make jokes while seeing a city burn below him and in the games he can be unfazed after being captured and jailed for half a year while Dr. Robotnik takes over the world, but here's something you'll never see from a SEGA product.
Here's hoping he'll be able to contribute to saving the day this time. Sometimes letting it all out is the healthiest option after all, it's a good thing Princess Sally Acorn was able to help Sonic not keep it all bottles up until it burst in less constructive ways...

I always feel like this stifles Sonic as a character, not letting him show any manner of sadness or depression. It's kind of like how Nintendo is basically rendering Mario as a 2D cardboard cut out by never letting him have any character development beyond just being the guy who always saves the day.
Yep I remember there was an Archie comic cover where he was fighting Mecha Sally and the previews showed tears in his eyes, but on the official release the tears were removed. Apparently he can't even show that much emotion neither.
Course others like him since they feel he's indomitable and refuses to ever stop or get too phased by things, so it definitely depends on how you like to view Sonic as at the end of the day.
