He'd known it was a terrible idea.
The client had insisted, certain that whatever kidnapped his teenage daughter had disappeared into the ocean. Trapper had told him, several times, that if she'd gone into the waves she wasn't coming back.
But oh, the money.
So Trapper had finally boarded a crab fishing boat, during a torrential storm, cursing his client and himself and the ocean and every goddamned fish in it.
And now, thirteen hours and one shipwreck later, he sat up on his elbows, dimly aware of sand beaneath him and waves licking at his feet.
He vaguely recalled being flung over the iron railing of the ship when a wave roughly the size of the Chrysler building slammed its the side, and the plunge into icy water that tore him every which way.
The moon was rising into the sky and the stars cast a cool light down onto the beach, clear and unperturbed by artificial lighting from the city. Where was he?
The hunter sat up, fighting down nausea as his brain reeled in protest, and plunged a hand into the pocket of his pants. He pulled out the sopping wet pack of Marlboro Reds and wrinkled his nose in distaste before discarding them, swearing under his breath.
He checked the other pocket, his stomach falling when his fingers closed around his curiously light flask. He lifted it into the light with a scowl, watching the light of the moon wink off the open cap without much surprise (but with plenty of hate).
Trapper let out an impressive string of curse words under his breath as he shoved the container back into his pocket and got to his feet, back sore and aching from his unwilling nap in the dirt. He turned to scan his surroundings, surprised to find himself facing a line of tropical trees, palm fronds swaying in the ocean breeze.
With a reluctant grumble, Trapper pinched the bridge of his nose, muttering "Fuck," before he headed into the trees, eager to find civilization and demand a pint of beer and their most carcinogenic cigarettes.
