"but kyo is the scifi equivolent of the smalltown homebody, never having left the state/country before."
Oh wow, ahaha damned, this is gonna be exciting :D.
I admit to have been following this comic loyally since I read it all over the course of week about a year and a half ago. Loving it :3. (and still love the pic of Tala, too!)

their idea of stopping you from suicide is enclosing all large, open spaces in a bubble of protective atmosphere and technology.
if you jumped, alarms would sound and the bottom of the bubble would turn into goo and you'd just plop into it and slide down to a collection point
CHUIANS THINK OF THIS STUFF

That is the first thing I pictured.
And I have just a tiny sneaking suspicion you might've been thinking about them when you were drawing, too. :D

Sorry. Syd Mead is considered to be one of the first "Futurist" style illustrators who's work was popularized in the late 1970s through to the present with his dynamic images presenting his view of fantastic machines and citizens in the future. He was most notably with his conceptual design work for movies such as Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Blade Runner, 2010, and quite a few others.
My mistake. You're right about Mr. McQuarrie being the prime conceptual designer for the Star Wars series, but Syd Mead designed a walking machine for traversing rough terrain that the Star Wars design team at least "Borrowed" the foot pad design for their ATAT troop transports. That's about the only "Contribution" Mr. Mead ever gave to Star Was, as far as I know. A minor part I'll admit, but I encourage you to check out his work.
