Werewolf Calendar - The Champion
My submission for there 2012 Werewolf Calendar http://www.werewolfcalendar.com
Ordering starts September 1st!
"The Champion" - 11"x14" watercolor and colored pencil on Arches watercolor paper - A clan's most powerful and celebrated warrior being ceremoniously painted for battle.
Here was my assigned writeup:
Both wild and urban werewolves have both been occasionally spotted wearing body paint. The precise and definite reasons for this behavior are as yet unknown, though it is speculated to play a part in the ceremonial celebrations and rituals werewolf society partakes in. It has also been suggested that body paint may play an important role in courtship rituals, allowing each werewolf to stand out individually. Body paint may be ornate or fairly minimal depending on the region or whether the werewolf resides within an urban or wild setting. Urban werewolves have access to a wide variety of artificial pigments, readily available for purchase whereas wild werewolves are often limited to natural found pigments composed of ground stones, berries and other plant material. As colorful displays are a detriment to everyday life, especially the ability to camouflage during a hunt, body paint is thought to be restricted in use for ceremonial occasions only.

I think this piece represents a real milestone for your skill-wise, the amount of energy and sheet technical skill poured into this is staggering. As you already know, I'm an enormous fan of those textures you achieved in the rocks and ground! I also love how the background fades back, you knew where to put that detail and where not to put it so there isn't much to distract. Yet there is a lot to look at! This piece draws you in and holds you, just fantastic!
Aw wow thank you, that's quite a compliment especially coming from you. Your piece is amazing!
I really put a lot of myself into this, yes, as I did with the last WWC I was part of. I like using these projects to challenge myself, and did I ever with this one x_x I just hope I can create more like this. It takes a lot of energy!

Thank you :) Yeah I tried to do something a little different because I never really felt the native american thing was "me" anyways, as popular as it is. I wanted a specific look: the fog, the green grass, the tall stones, and tried to incorporate a fitting culture influence.
This is BREATHTAKING! I love how you handle traditional media, and all the details, expressions, ornamentation, and everything are perfect! I love your take on the culture, and your stone carvings are fantastic; they really add to the scene. You really did your research and paid attention to detail and it paid off, big time! :D LOVE IT!
Hehe! I love this piece! I'm still figuring out if I want to hang it at home or work, but since I'm at work more often than home, it's going above my desk...as soon as I arrange the other wolf paraphernalia. ^.^
Thank you for working with me on getting it!
And...You have such a serious write-up, it cracks me up. ^.^
