"There was always work to do in the temple Barghest upheld in Vuul’s name."
That was pretty much the only constant, aside from worship to Vuul, that existed inside the temple’s walls.
Every day, there were new tasks to take care of, spots to clean and touch up and faithful from nearby settlements to aid. Servants came and went, most of them being moved around by Barghest, keeping the non-core workforce of the temple always fresh and able-bodied.
It is why the servant, a fox who had begun his service a month ago, was currently walking across the temple’s inner courtyard thought Magistrate Barghest’s orders were confounding. Why in this ever-shifting place would he put his full trust in one of his servants in his absence? It simply didn’t make sense.
Nevertheless, the delegation from one of the nearby settlements needed their request to be tended to by the temple… Which meant trusting the Magistrate’s trust.
Arriving at a small study across the courtyard, the vulpine servant steadied himself. He knocked twice on the door before stepping in. Inside, he found another servant of the temple, this one wearing robes slightly more prestigious than his own.
Chew Chew glanced back at the new arrival, never breaking his prayer pose, before nodding. With that, the shark closed his eyes, begging forgiveness for having to interrupt his prayers mid-session to tend to temple matters.
Opening his eyes again, he spoke.
“Yes?” Chew Chew asked, glancing over his shoulder. A curt smile bloomed on his lips as his eyebrows gently lifted. “How may this humble servant help you, my fellow believer?”
It took a moment for the other venerite to speak, blinking a few times…
Were his eyes playing tricks on him? Just now, he could’ve sworn he was talking to the Magistrate himself- No… The vulpine venerite glanced at the shark again, eyes widening a bit.
Everything… Everything was so like him. He prided himself on being able to discern even the most minute of details, but it didn’t stop him from drawing this same conclusion. It was as if he was staring straight into the eyes of his master, Magistrate Barghest, and not those of another venerite.
“W-Well… A delegation has arrived from a nearby settlement. They claim a violent schism is about to take place as lord Vuul-khan’s faith spreads across the populace, and desire guidance on how best to quell such a thing.” The venerite said, voice shaky before how much this shark acted, moved and sounded like the Magistrate. “I thought to consult with the Magistrate, but he’s still to return from his summons… As such, I came to you, Bargh-”
The venerite stopped himself, blinking once.
“To you, f-fellow venerite.” The fox corrected himself.
A barely audible chuckle escaped Chew Chew at the slip-up, a twinge of pride blooming within his chest.
Because to be mistaken for Barghest was an honour, Chew Chew was more than happy to accept. Twice so since it affirmed his teacher’s lessons were truly having an effect on him… Proved the very aura of Barghest’s faith loomed over him now, irrevocably connected to him.
Countless teachings had made the blinding, awe-inspiring faith that guided Barghest’s hand, Chew Chew’s to wield as well.
Barghest’s light was part of him now, guiding his mind. And the faith that made the wolf a trusted Magistrate now moved Chew Chew’s body and soul towards that same, glorious path.
“Hmm… That is a pressing matter.” Chew Chew hummed, motioning for the venerite to follow. His mannerisms and his actions were familiar. Perfectly neutral and serene… As if coming from Barghest himself. “Come. I shall attend to this matter personally in the Magistrate’s stead.”
