It’s 8:00 PM and Yosh, Tulip, and Ajax are three very lucky little birds. This is because today is New Year’s Eve and the trio are with their parents and their parents’ friends celebrating the coming of the new year.
“You tired?” asked Ajax upon returning to join the duo of ducklings after having just had his diaper changed.
“Nope!” chirped Tulip as she continued to dance to the children’s music that was playing on the nearby stereo. “Gonna’ make it to midnight!”
“I’m…,” Yosh started to say before his beak opened wide to let loose a yawn. “I’m not tired.”

“Watch this!” exclaimed Yosh as his second wind kicked in.
“Ooh!” awed Ajax as he watched the green-and-white colored dino-duckling spin himself around-and-around-and-around.
“Watch me!” announced Tulip as she stood on one foot and twirled about. “Whee!”

It was now 8:30 PM and the trio of baby birdies had just been given sippy cups containing sparkling apple juice.
“Yummy,” remarked Tulip before licking her lips.
“Tasty,” yawned Ajax as he sat upon the floor and wobbled about on his padded bottom.
“Think we’ll make it?” Yosh asked before taking another sip of the special drink that he and his friends had been given.

“Me, too,” Yosh added with a yawn.
“Is it the new year yet?” asked Ajax as he started to feel his eyelids grow heavy.

Ajax, Yosh, and Tulip were all toddling about in an attempt to keep themselves from falling asleep before the grown-ups told them that the new year had arrived.
“Want see new year,” yawned Tulip.
“Me, too,” Yosh agreed while attempting to hold his head up.
“We all…,” Ajax started to say before he let out a big yawn. “Make it.”

Yosh, Tulip, and Ajax were all sitting on the floor and leaning against each other. Their little eyes barely staying open as the music lulled them further towards falling asleep.
“I got you,” Yosh’s dad said as he picked up his son and held him over his shoulder. “Time for bed.”
“Quack,” was Yosh’s only response before his eyes closed completely and his trip to the wonderful world of dreams began.
“You, too,” Ajax’s mother said with a smile as she swaddled her swan son in her wings. “See you in the new year, sweetie.”
“…,” The young swan wanted to say something, but not a word got out before he fell fast asleep.
“Alright, Tulip,” her mother said while raising her darling duckling of a daughter towards her father. “Maybe next year.”
“Make it?” Tulip softly asked as her dad carried her into the nursery where all three little ones would be sharing a crib for the night.
“Almost,” Tulip’s father said before giving his daughter a kiss and laying her down into the crib. “See you in the new year, cutie patootie.”

Mr. O’Ducky shut the door to the nursery to allow the children to sleep while the adults went about doing what grown ups do at a party after their children are fast asleep.

Hehe. I am sure that Zee-Zee would be watching Yosh, Ajax, and Tulip be taken back to bed while feeling so big for not yet haven fallen asleep. Perhaps our squirrel friend would be on his second, or third, sippy cup of sparkling apple juice with full confidence that he, unlike the trio of burbs, would make it to see the new year?
Thank you for taking the time to read over this little story. This is, technically, the first fun thing I have written since starting at my new job back in May. I must say that it was quite rewarding and all around delightful to be all cute again. :)

It's an adorable story, Yosh, and it's great to see you writing! And I agree with you about what Zee-Zee is doing...
Zed Squirrel yawned and glanced at his watch. Squirrels are less active in the winter, and fond of sleeping. Staying up until midnight isn't much fun even for the adults, he thought to himself, and hoped he wasn't just getting old. The toddler sitting on his lap looked sleepily up at his daddy as his empty sippy cup dropped unnoticed from his fingers. "It's New Year," Zee-Zee said, hoping his father would confirm that it really was the time he'd been trying to stay awake to see.
"Nearly," Zed smiled. He ruffled Zee-Zee's headfur and said "Staying awake is easier in the summer time. The sun stays up until much later at night, and it's much less cold, and it's the right time of year to be awake!"
Zee-Zee nodded positively, but his head stayed down after the final nod and his eyes closed. "Let's do new year in summer," he mumbled, as Zed stood up, cradling the little squirrel in his arms.
"That's a clever idea, my big squirrel," Zed told him. And he really thought it was! In six months' time, at the rate Zee-Zee was growing up, he probably would be ready to stay awake all the way to midnight, and a summer solstice celebration would be much more suitable for a squirrel family! Zed carried Zee-Zee up the stairs, saying "Let's have a potty break." All that apple juice probably wanted to come out by now, and sitting on the potty late at night was usually enough to finally settle the little squirrel down for a good night's sleep, however determined he was to stay awake.
Zee-Zee was already more than half asleep and dreaming of boasting to all his little friends that he'd seen in the new year like a big squirrel. When he woke up the next morning, he wasn't completely sure whether he'd done it or not, but he definitely remembered being very very clever!
