I love Schubert! He's one of the only guys that I'd consider sleeping with (as long as I had access to modern treatment for syphilis for both of us).
Personally, I've always viewed him as a stocky* otter. That's probably because the first song of his I studied was "Die Forelle" (The Trout) and the piano quintet that quotes it.
The more I think of it, the more I can actually see an otter as the "narrator" in that song: an otter would have a particular animus toward human fishers, since they're competing for the same prey, and the fact that the fisher has to muddy up the water to catch his prey would be like cheating to an otter.
*After all, he was nicknamed Schwammerl, literally "little mushroom", and images from his lifetime show him to be rotund. Were he alive today, he'd be the definition of a "little potato".
