"There's never a sight across my travels as terrifying as the sight of nothing in igwulf territory. I'd always heard tales of the igwulf long-sentires. They were stuff of legends and nightmares alike, what you hear about those ones. Groups of only three or four igwulf that live off the lands, hunting, scavenging, only having the each other for company, and only returning home one by one to report anything of interest. It's said the could blend into the shade cast by the woods themselves if they like, tread more quiet than air, and take an armed force without a single weapon or strip of armour among 'em. They could strike before you'd ever know for certain they were there. Take a comrade faster than you could say their name. Probably for food, they'd always say...
But you never really appreciate stories like those until you're in one. The whole way, to trade our generator for whatever potions or artifacts we could get from the igwulf, I could feel them watching us. We all could. We all got tense, whether we showed it or not. It was like the shadows themselves were pondering whether or not to swallow us up...
And could at any moment, if they felt so inclined. Yet we never actually saw an eye of 'em. Never a tail. Never a hair. I was never so relieved as when we saw the first near-sentry perch. Probably no safer, really, but to actually see what was watching us back...
I can see now why igwulf settlements are never attacked. They say every single one of them has a capability to stalk the wilds like that. You could destroy their homes, sure, but then you just have a whole forest of angry shadows. They'd have to go somewhere, and they can hide just as well in urban shades as the woods, I know well. It makes sense to me now, the saying: 'Leave the shadows where they are, keep the cities lit.'
A bit more igwulf lore.
The picture was just something I'd been wanting to do for awhile, and thought I'd try out a bunch of new things with, especially in terms of colouring. It was something of a speedpaint... in spite of taking the better part of the day.
Tips on what looks good and bad among it would be much appreciated.

This is fascinating! I'd have to say that this is your best drawing yet! You only seem to get better and better at blowing me away with 'experiments' (successful ones!) like this. =3 The lore, angles, environment, and definitely the presence and emotions of the igwulves in the scene...they're all fantastic.
The caravan-folk seem a little hard to make out... I know that they're farther away and logically less-detailed because of it, but they still seem a tad too under-detailed. Also, the igwulf that's the focus of this picture (you? :3 )... His pose is pretty good all in all, but I'm a bit unsure about how you placed his feet. I can't place it exactly, it's just that his legs are too...'crab'-stanced. You probably did a heck of a lot better with that pose than I ever could though. xD
The picture overall though? Simply wonderful. ^^ The small mistakes don't break the mood or immersion of this piece. I'm amazed at how well you can draw, bud. =3

( Oops, I accidentally cut myself off early there. XD )
So it seems that igwulves are very, very watchful over 'intruders'. But I'm curious why they would so heavily monitor a small merchant caravan. They seem distrustful...but with their abilities, such a small group wouldn't be very dangerous even if their intentions WERE bad, would they? The strong monitoring seems to imply that the igwulves have been betrayed or wronged by outsiders in the past...? That's the sense I'm getting out of it anyways.

Thanks you for your kind words, Charem. ^^
The frustrating thing about everyone thinking the caravan is under-detailed for me is that I worked very hard just to put in that much detail. X3 But, then, I do have to practice things like backgrounds and tiny precision details, so... :P
None of the igwulf pictured are Reed, actually. This is actually a fairly neat demonstration of how most red igwulf have darker, more subdued shades to their fur. Reed is a relatively bright shade of red.
Its feet are also, admittedly, a little off. They were supposed to be planted on the main tree trunk, one with the grain and the other perpendicular to it, respectively. Painting lineless, I am reminded, is difficult. :P
And to your other comment: The igwulf are generally the stuff of fear, hatred, and fascination to the other races and species of the world. They don't have laws, per say, just taboos and virtues and a fear of each other's vengeance. Their society is, in spite of working well for them, a state of nature model (more Locke than Hobbes), which horrifies and confuses other species. Though it isn't hellish, there isn't much trust among igwulf, let alone with those who are looking to get something from them. Strictly speaking, their lack of trust as well as trustworth is probably a reason why, not actually a result of something, though it also keeps them from being annexed and subdued like so many others. It's that fascination with their unusual ways that draws traders, looking to exchange luxuries for igwulf artifacts and the like, which fetch high prices to collectors. Afterall, it's nigh impossible to loot what is only seen if it wants you to see it, so trading is the only way to get such things.

Oof, sorry to frustrate you. xP Well, honest critiques...don't let 'em get ya down, heheh.
I noticed the subdued hues, and I see! =3 Well, darker hues would allow for better blending-in too.
I'm not even sure how you do lineless painting...maybe I'll give it a shot sometime, as an experiment. It looks quite cool. =P
*nods* That makes sense... A more feral model of lifestyle, making igwulves appear more 'savage' than more 'civilized' societies. I could definitely understand the fears that would arise from that (and honestly make the situation even more divided).
Definitely interesting stuff! I bet you and Guan would have a blast exchanging details about your species' societies. His character world/background is basically of a shamanistic lizardman tribe, which shares a lot of the 'uncultured' elements of your igwulves, though his tribe operates in a significantly-different way too. =3
Wahhh, I need backstory for myself. <P I feel so shallow after all the work you guys have put in your backgrounds. Maybe it's time I revive and re-write the Starfire Island story...

It's not the critique that frustrates me so much as my own shortcomings, I guess. I'm actually glad to get such helpful attentions brought to things. X3
Aye, most igwulf blend in better than Reed on colour alone. Reed's fortunate enough to be quite good at hiding regardless of his more vibrant colours.
Lineless is tough. You really have to have a pretty firm grasp of shading to pull it off, or else everything bleeds together. I don't think I'm quite there yet, as can be seen in the sketches of the caravan still seen, but I like to think I'm getting there. :3
Heh. Interesting. We should volley the lore of our species some time, him and I. :3
Also, mayhaps you should. It'd surely be interesting. X3

Aww. ^^; Well, look at it this way: you're tons better than I am. XD Nah, we all have things we can improve about our abilities, even in things we're already quite good at. That's part of the fun, making advancement in things we like to do. =3 If we were just the best at what we enjoy doing, it'd get kinda boring, don't ya think? *hugs*
Haha, well, I would think red isn't a very good camo-color even if it were darker/duller. Of course, I know igwulves come in more than just red, yes? What is the typical range of colors for them? =3
Also, I was curious about another thing. Some igwulves are winged, yes? At least, I've seen you draw winged ones here and there. How does that work exactly - what determines if an igwulf is winged or not, and why there's that variation? Are winged igwulves actually a separate species entirely?
Ooh, I better learn shading better before I attack lineless methods then. xD
^..^ I think you guys would have quite the blast, hehe!
And yes, I will work on re-publishing my own story sometime. I lived in a Char society of my own, on Starfire Island - a 'savage' clan, somewhat like yours and Guan's, though it obviously was quite different too. The story is an old one, something I wrote back when I was 14 - 15, but it's quite detailed.

Their colour range in all facets can be explained here: http://neuropod.net/imagehost/uploa.....838fdcef4e.png
They tend to live in more-or-less colour appropriate environments. The most common are red and green main-fur, both of which live in wooded areas, learning what their respective colours can better conceal against, and supplementing each other well in that.
I think you're mistaken about the wings, though. Igwulf are un-winged. You may have seen a dragonawe I drew and mistaken it for an igwulf, but... ^^;

Oh...I wish I had had that guide when I made my igwulf-self that one time. xD I wonder - does the form meet with your 'rules'? http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4239059/ Primary fur color shade variations are allowed, you said, and I did a variation of red sort of... Or is that too out of the range? I might redo it if it's a little off, sometime... I never considered my internal color, for that matter. I'd probably go with blue, to match my eyes. =P
Oh, my bad. It probably was a dragonawe then. Which look sort of similar, honestly. ^^; Probably just because of your style. Sorry!

Heh. Ambush predators is actually a pretty accurate way to describe igwulf tactics when dealing with targets. They're very good at staying sly and subtle and getting into all sorts of places one wouldn't expect.
It sounds like a kind of rough memory... But, I guess these feelings can be fun through the lens and safety of retrospect. X3
