14" x 22" color pencil Dec 2010
Finally reposting this because the first one was a really crappy photo. This is still a photo but is real close to original. Original sold at AC this year.
With this, like most of my other pieces, I was experimenting with texture and shadow(everything is still pretty new to me) and I learned a lot of do's and don'ts.
She is a character from one of my stories(WIP) and I plan on doing at least 2 more pics of her.
In this pic, Keshara is bored and increasingly frustrated with a queenship she did not want. A position of leadership that was thrust upon her and one she had no choice but to accept.
In the story, She was a warrior that organized and led a revolt against the oppressive lords of the region and the self appointed High King . She was prompted into starting and leading the revolt by a fox spirit of 7 tails, a guardian of the balance of this land who saw something in Keshara that could be used to restore the tranquility of the land. Keshara united the various factions of the region into a substantial army and with the help of the fox spirit, overthrew the lords and high king. She would have went on her way but there was friction and distrust among the factions when it came to a new leadership. All the faction leaders though were fiercely loyal to Keshara and they agreed amongst themselves that she should be made queen. Keshara was horrified at the idea but she saw that if she declined, the ensuing
kaos would be worse than the battles they just went through and she reluctantly accepted.
She thought her only way out was to institute a new system of government, one she learner about in the western lands where she had fought in some small wars -she is basically a mercenary - . Something similar to a constitutional monarchy with a king or queenship that could be voted out of the position.
She was near to achieving this goal when a stranger came visiting.......
The fox in the pic is one of the offspring of the fox spirit who gave her life to save Keshara at the end of the last battle.
OH,she did put on a few pounds since she has been queen but will be in better shape later in the story(Book 2).

Well maybe not a beginner. I dabbled with ink back in the 70's, mostly full color stippling. A couple were rather large and those tool a lot of time. I think that is where I learned the patience. Didn't start drawing again until last year when I tried color pencils for the first time.

Sorry about the lengthy narrative. I had been meaning to put this in with the pic description.

Thank you McClaw, I'm so glad to hear that. While you were posting, I was writing a reply to a previous comment. (Snobby bitchy type) It is a partial outline of the story she is from, sans the sub plot about the stranger that arrives at the end of the book. It is a sci-fi twist to the story continued with book 2.
I just now posted it with the pic in case you are interested.
I should have another version of her at AC next year. Not sure which scene yet.
Oh,and I am now trying my hand at surfing the web. I just got an internet connection for my home for the first time ever. No more library PCs.

Thank you but I have a long way to go before I master those things. I don't think I've done any 2 pics quite the same way. I try a little something new with each pic and probably learn more what not to dos than anything else. I love to do detail and to be honest, I really have a hard time not to, it's how I see things in my head. I had a lot of fun with this one,(well I enjoy doing all my drawings)I just let fly with the pencil and made curves and whatnots and made a little adjustment later.
I use Faber-Castell mainly but also have a few Prismacolor. The 2 brands definitely have different characteristics and can do things with one that I can't do with another. in some cases PC will draw on top of certain FC colors that other FC color won't mark on, especially white. I will also use fixitive on a piece when I'm done and have had trouble with PC changing color or blending with a color underneath, sometimes greatly. I also like Stongehenge 100% cotton paper much better than any other paper I've tried.
It's nice to have a little of the background of this piece. Its interesting. Its always been my experience that power is better held in the hands of those who don't want it. I'm writing a book where a queen and a very unusual fox work directly and indirectly to bring about great change and free a lot of people.
I tend to draw better when I have a story to go with it. It started out as a short story but evolved into novel length leading to a more involved second book. I am not very good with a keyboard and much faster writing Longhand (still slow) and thus only have sections written in detail. The rest is only outlined. I have 3 novel length stories in about the same state and hope to someday get with someone to help me finish them. The only working title right now is "Convergence". Second book has a sci-fi / parallel universe twist.
Kesharaexa, her sister Nataraexa, and "the stranger" (yeah, he's a tiger), the sole surviver of the crew of a star cruiser thrown into Kesh's universe during a far from normal wormhole transit, team up to recover his downed ship, which was crippled by the fluctuating physical laws of this reality, in order to save the world from destruction.
In the strangers universe, a natural disaster that would have destroyed his planet had been long since detected and averted by technology. Technology this world doesn't have.
