"After Careful Consideration of your exam performance, we have determined you are not fit to receive a mage license at this time.
We understand this news may be difficult, but we encourage you to use this time to learn from this and try again next year.
Licenses are distributed to the most trusted mages, and it is important that these exams are not taken lightly.
Thank you for your understanding.
- Headmaster Sven"
The letter no one wanted, but so many got. The only way to leave the college as a student of the University of Mana and Sorcery, is to get a license to practice magic outside of the college.
Agithae promised his lover that they'd pass their exams and leave together. A duo of powerful mages that can take on any challenge, and become famous throughout the lands. He studied every day, making sure his technique was perfect, so that he could always be with them. His pyromancy should have been unmatched, and more than ready for the outside world.
The annual license exam began, and everything seemed to be going without a hitch. Perfect control of easy spells, and proper caution to his hotter intermediate spells, his final task was to show he could manage the hardest flares one can muster without injury. Just as he thought he managed it without fainting, he felt the slightest singe upon his sleeve. Gods, did he seriously burn himself? Perhaps the instructors didn't notice? Everything was perfect 'up' until this moment.
... But nothing leaves the watchful eye of the Headmaster, and with this one small error, the letter came to his dorm.
"I'm so sorry, Agi." Aria finally turned away from his trunk. "They're already deploying me on a mission..."
The raccoon's eyes widened as the news hit him. He was hanging on with everything he had, but this news seemed the tipping point.
"I don't know when I'll come back," The fox continued, "That's if I even will. Mages like us don't all get freedom like this, you know?" He laughed, but it was hollow, mirthless.
"I... I just..." Agi sniffled. He was trying to put on a brave front, but it was faltering.
Aria frowned and knelt down besides Agi, taking the other's paws in his. "Thank you, for everything you've given me. I-...I'll always love you. ...I understand if you don't want to wait on me, but for now? This has to be farewell."
Aria cupped Agithae's chin and lifted his head. One last kiss on the lips, one last moment shared. Neither wanted to break it off, but Aria had to. He gave his lover one last smile, then got up. He took his trunk and went to the door. He turned to look at Agithae one last time... then shut the door behind him.
Finally alone, possibly forever, the raccoon finally broke down into a heap on the floor.
Ha! Snuck in one last little piece of art before the end of the year! Have a little prequel to Act 2. I haven't really ever drawn someone truly upset before, and after seeing someone else do it, I wanted to get some practice on that sort of emotion too!
