This gouache illustration, completed last night, channels my vision of two iconic characters from Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book—the menacing Shere Khan and his loyal accomplice, Tabaqui. Drawing from the tales of Mowgli, I sought to reimagine these figures with a darker, more visceral edge.
Shere Khan, rendered as a leucistic Bengal tiger, embodies spectral menace. His ghostly white coat contrasts starkly with jagged scars and battle-related injuries, a nod to his relentless enmity toward humans. In Kipling’s original, the tiger is born with a crippled paw, but here, I reimagined his deformity as a cruel twist of fate: his paw is mangled and bloodied from a steel trap, symbolizing humanity’s role in his rage. This injury reinforces his role as a vengeful force, haunted as much by his past as he is by his hatred for humans.
For Tabaqui, I chose the striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena), a species native to South and Central Asia. By casting her as a hyena rather than a jackal, I aimed to avoid making her a mere miniaturized version of the wolves who protect Mowgli or clash with Shere Khan. The hyena’s lean, sinewy frame and feral intensity lend her a distinct identity—part scavenger, part menacing underdog. Her presence underscores the jungle’s brutality while ensuring she stands out as a character in her own right, not just a shadowy companion.
