I've always thought about rocks that stick up out of the ground, or rock monuments humans create. I see them as the bones of the earth, parts of it's skeleton, invisible connections, nerves of energy keeping everything connected.

Sorry that I'm replying late, lol. Jeeze. To answer your question, the standing stones (according to eye witness accounts from the Roman empire) were painted bright, garish colors at one time, but time has worn off most of the paint. Another cool tidbit, the outer rim of the tomb at Newgrange was once crowned with glittering quart, but time, robbers, and other elements has worn away most if not all of it.
