Nathan at one point made a foolish bet on Kaerwyn, and ended up being mindfucked pretty hard to an alternate persona that was seeking power. During that process, he ended up hurting many people close to him, including both Caius and Ernest.

The anger and hatred over the betrayal and mistreatment was used in both of them by foreign entities to gain sway, such that they could get even with Nathan. Caius was possessed by a wendigo-like entity called Heorot, who was more than willing to do unto others.

Nathan for his part is well aware of his own failure, and hopes that one day he can rise above it. But also, he knows he may not, and if he doesn't, he deserves it.
