This is, IIRC, what Edison called 'long-legged Marys', and produced around 120 volts DC. Edison believed in a distribution system of DC only. It is of course impractical for anything more than lighting one building. It was Tesla's invention of the AC transformer (& NO I am NOT talking about shape-shifting scrap metal robots) that made the modern systems of power distribution possible.
The rivalry between Edison and Nikolai Tesla has been a great story for many years... It would make a pretty good movie.
The other device in the background looks to me to be a ac-dc convertor or some such, maybe an exciter-generator. It also has all the look of one produced up to maybe 1935.
