Californian rabbits are a larger sized meat rabbit known for their excellent meat production and "siamese" patterned coats.
A man in California started devolvping them in 1923 by crossing the New Zealand Rabbit and the Himalayain Rabbit (Himalaya Rabbits are a smaller pet/show breed! they have the same siamese patterns, so the two breeds look very simular.) Just a few years of perfecting the breed, in 1928, they were showcased for the first time. By 1939, the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association) recognized them as an official breed!
To this day, they are the second most popular meat rabbit breed in the world, second to the New Zealand Rabbit.
