if you make your own avatar, the only cost is uploading texture images, which is $L10 a pop. Depending on the av your building and how many unique textures you'd need, they can cost very little (my Liz av has 4 unique textures, so $L40).
Paying someone ELSE to make one will obviously cost more, as you're paying more for their time and building skill than for the texture cost
