The Netherland Dawrf is a very small (In fact, the very smallest of all breeds) rabbit, being absolutely no bigger than 2.5 pounds, with individuals averaging 1.5 pounds. By standard, they are brachycephalic, small bodied, with large eyes.
They were bred in the Netherlands in the early 1900's, when breeders selected smaller sized wild European rabbits with Polish rabbits. (Polish rabbits are an older breed, devolved in the mid to late 1800's, and officially being brought to England in 1884. Today they a dwarf breed aswell, and are slightly larger than Netherland dwarfs.) Because of directly breeding them with wild rabbits, this breed was not very docile, behaving fearfully and sometimes agressivly. Their temperament has gotten better through decades of selective breeding, but even as late as the 1980's, they still possessed some of these traits. Today, they are much friendlier, though I have personally heard reports of them still having attitudes!
They were imported into the United State sometime in the 1960's, where they were officially recognized by the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association) in 1969!
