the lionhead rabbit is a small breed (no more than 4lbs!) bred as show rabbits and for pets. They're named after the thick wooly "lion's mane" around their head (and some long wooly fur also on their butt!). They generally have this mane accompanied by a medium-length body fur, which really makes the mane stand out! Their manes can vary depending on their parents genes. Some have a single mane gene, others have a double mane gene, and the offspring's will have more or less mane depending on its genes!
Lionhead rabbits originated from Belgium and France in the 1980's. It's believed that the breeders were simply trying to create a long haired dwarf rabbit breed, crossing a Swiss Fox Rabbit and Netherland Dwarf Rabbit, which caused the mane gene mutation. The Lionhead was then further developed over the next decade, rising in popularity and getting imported to the United States in the 1990's. They were recognized by the BRC (British Rabbit Council) by 2002, and the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association) reconized them 11 years later in 2013.
