The New Zealand Rabbit is the NUMBER ONE most popular meat rabbit in the world, and, despite its name, it is an amarican breed! It's known for its larger size (9 -12lbs) and phenomenal meat production. They also are very popular pets, as they can have docile, friendly personalities. They come in a variety of colors, but most commonly you will see REW new zealands. REW stands for Red Eyed White- a solid white rabbit with red eyes. (Or, albino! this doesnt only apply to new zealands, many other breeds may be REW) Now, this wasn't always the case. The breed was oringally nicknamed "Amarican Reds" or "New Zealand reds" as the most common color they came in was red, up until 1917 (just one year after the ARBA [American Rabbit Breeders Association] recognized them as an official breed) when people started slowly breeding mainly white rabbits as their pelts were more valuable in the fur market (easy to dye!)
