I've been working real hard the last few months working on a campaign for my group inspired by the Dark Souls series. I don't think it would come as a shock to a lot of people to learn that Dark Souls is without a doubt one of my most favorite series of games ever. It's been another of my inspirations, and they never fail to give me a burst of wonder and creativity whenever I go back and revisit them. I've been so excited that I've started drawing some scenes out before my players have even finished making their characters! A character that you the viewer may recognize if you've been around for some of my older work!
The campaign will be set in a sort of alternate timeline to the story of Valerie Lilac and her party. One where they weren't able to stop the evil queen and her ceremony to condemn the world in a cataclysm while her own kingdom would be the only one to remain. In the original story of course our heroes triumph over hardship and defeat the villain to win the day.
In this timeline, however... The queen completes her ritual, our heroes not able to stop it as the apocalypse comes. Though people had assumed the destruction of the world would be literal, what instead happens is a decay sweeps everything including the queens domain as it floats to the sky. Demons crawl out from below the made crater, and a curse is wrought to all the living. The undead curse. Leading to everyone coming back after death, over and over until eventually their sense of being and purpose is sucked away, and they become hollow, mindless and soulless walking corpses.
An untold amount of time passes, much changes while also remaining the same. The queen still among her people, and even looked upon as a god, perpetually extends the life of this world with what little embers remain of it by performing the same ritual she did when the heroes tried to stop her.
What of our heroes? They too fell under the curse. The fate of the undead usually is not a matter of if they go hollow, but when. The once proud and mighty revolutionaries now husks of their former selves, mindlessly fulfilling what little sense of duty they may had before losing their souls.
Can our party of undead somehow push through these overwhelming odds, will they find a way to fix this dying world? Even I don't know.

Oooo! I knew it! Valerie! ^!^ But so glum. And that green cloak! *GASPS* It's Alcaeus'! Oh no. ;-; Poor bunny and lion. ;-; You certainly captured the hopeless and gloomy look with that, and the bg! It's like got Dark Sun, and Dark Souls, vibes alright! The ruined land, city, and ominous red sun in the sky. A burning dim sky.
The Queen seems to have turned the world into something akin to The Shadowfell. Only, as you said, clearly Dark Souls themed. Btw, you stuck to the lore really well! Even the ritual is a nod to the reigniting of the flame ritual. It's a perfect sounding D&D adaption! Hehe! ^!^
What's really no surprise is how amazing your DMing skills are with how great of a storyteller and collaborator you are. Hope you and your friends are as hyped as you, and have lots of fun! ^!^
(So wish I could join, sweetie. >.<)

Honestly? The GM of the Valerie campaign is stupid excited to see my interpretation of this story twisted in such a dark spin. I did my best to respect the source material while also incorporating the same feel and themes as Dark Souls. We're going as far as to use Dark Souls Tabletop RPG system, which is a modified 5e!
But yes you picked up on the details that I very much hope my players do as well when it comes time for them to see this big moment. We shall see when the time comes!!

Ooo, nice! ^!^ Hehe! They're gonna be a player, then? Hehe. ^!^ Wonder who they'll be.
And oh? Heh. Wonder if that can be adapted further to 5.5? XD (Yeah, I'm a little biased, especially after purchasing the books. But it's a good point to try. ^!^ No harm in suggesting, yes?)
Hehehe! ^!^ Yay! ^!^ I bet they will! And it'll hit them hard in the feels.
