Chapter 03
San Javier Mexico Dullac Cave
The Chupacabra family wakes up and they are hungry and also irritated that their cub hasn't returned. The father is sure that their cub has disappeared voluntarily and that makes him even more irritated. Their cub belongs to the family and it's not okay to leave them like that.
The whole family leaves the cave and even though they are hungry, they start looking for their young. Chupa's older brother shows them the way to Chava's farm and when they have landed, the father sniffs the ground. The father has a very good sense of smell and he can smell his young in several places. After they have examined the farm carefully, they fly together to the airport where the father found scent trails from the young. This scent trail is stronger than the one on the farm and the father concludes that their young must have flown over the blue sea and they intend to do the same.
But first they want food and there is a farm with many goats a few kilometers from the airport and they fly there. No one in the family has wanted to attack these goats because there are several residential buildings nearby. But the family intends to fly a longer distance and not sleep in the usual cave so they dare to attack the goats. The whole family lands and satisfies their hunger and luckily they are not seen by the farmer or anyone else. When everyone in the family is full, they leave the farm and fly past the airport and out over the ocean. There are no planes flying today so they can fly undisturbed.
No one in the family has flown over the ocean before and none of them know how big the ocean is but that doesn't matter. If their young has managed to fly over it, they can too. The father is very determined and the mother is starting to agree with him. There is not much wind tonight so the chupacabra family has an easy time flying. The father can smell small scent trails of his young while he is flying and knows he is in the right direction.
About an hour later the family finally sees land. They have arrived in Sonore, the same place that Chupa chose. The father flies over the city and he can smell his young's scent trails in several places but none of the scent trails are fresh so he concludes that their young is not here anymore and the whole family flies on.
When the family passes the Gila National Forest they see that the animal area is cordoned off and there is a scent of goats but they are not there. The father guesses that their young must have attacked the goats but that it happened during the day because the scent trail is so fresh. This must have happened while the family was sleeping. The father cannot understand why their young is active during the day. He has never been awake at daytime. The family flies on and they hope to find their young. A man who is out with his dog sees the chupacabra family and takes several photographs. He does not know what they are but he sees that they resemble the small animal that has been shown on TV. When the man gets home, he sends the photos to a local news agency.

Alex wakes up and looks around and sees that he is lying on the couch in the living room. Julia is lying next to him and she is still sleeping. Alex remembers the events of the day and stretches and leaves the couch. It is no longer raining and most of the sun has sunk beyond the horizon. Alex feels hungry and wakes Julia. Julia is confused when she wakes up and she also feels hungry so she goes out to the kitchen to fix a late dinner. She had not planned to sleep this long. Alex plugs in the phone jack because Julia unplugged it when the thunder started.
Alex remembers that both Chava and Luna and Memo have called and wanted to talk to him and now is a good time. Alex goes out to the kitchen and tells Julia that he should call his cousins while she cooks and she thinks it is a good idea. Alex calls Chava and Luna but it is Clara who answers. Alex explains that both Luna and Chava want to talk to him and she calls them. Chava is feeling unwell and can't bear to talk on the phone right now but Luna wants to talk to Alex and she wants Clara to leave her alone.
As soon as Clara has left, she immediately says that Chupa has been seen in many places and that he might be on his way to Alex. Alex has already understood that this is the case considering what he saw on the TV news earlier today. Luna is worried that it will cause problems but Alex doesn't think there will be any problems. Luna suddenly stops and it seems as if she is listening to something. Alex hears a reporter's voice from the TV but can't hear the words being said. It seems that Luna is talking to Chava and Clara. After a few seconds, Luna comes back.
- Alex, turn on channel 11 and watch. I think it's important. I'll wait on the phone while you watch.
Julia's phone has an extra long cord and it reach all the way to the living room if Alex pulls out the entire cord and he starts doing that. Alex turns on the TV and selects channel 11. It's the news right now and the picture shows Chupa's parents. The picture is sharp and a reporter says that the animals were seen as they crossed the Gila National Forest. Several scientists are wondering what kind of animals they are and many of the scientists are worried that the animals will cross the Mexican border and enter the United States. Since no one knows what they are, they must be stopped before they reach the United States.
Alex looks at the pictures and gets confused. Has Chupa left his family or are the rest of the family flying slower? The more Alex thinks about it, the more he realizes that Chupa has left his family and that they are looking for him. Alex doesn't know whether to take it positively or negatively. Chupa seems to know what he wants, but he's not sure his family agrees with him. Alex clears his throat.
- Chupa must have left his family and now they are looking for him.
- I think you're right. Can we do something about it?
- No. We don't know where he is. Chupa might already be here.
- Maybe you should tell your mom about Chupa in case he shows up outside your house.
- That's probably a good idea.
- Call me or Memo if there's any problems.
- I promise. Bye.
The conversation ends and the reporter on TV starts talking about other news. Alex starts walking towards the kitchen to tell her about Chupa but then he changes his mind. He can tell her about Chupa if he gets here, Julia doesn't need to know everything. Julia is making tacos and Alex loves it. Alex comes out to the kitchen and sits at the dining table while he waits for his food. Julia turns around.
- Did you get a hold of the cousins?
- I talked to Luna because Chava wasn't feeling well.
- Luna and Chava were anxious to get hold of you earlier today.
- I know. It was about some incidents at Chava's farm, but it's sold now.
- No problems, I hope.
- Of course not. I'm not causing any problems.
- I know, but the bullies are causing problems. What are their names? Tell me their full names, please.
- I don't think it will be better if you call their parents.
- I think so. Then the parents will know what their children are doing.
- Okay, Billy Johnson is the one who bullies me the most. Greg Petersen, Tom Maxom and Bob Campbell are also bullying me. Billy is the leader of the gang.
Julia writes down the names on a piece of paper that she has by the stove. The food is soon ready and Julia cuts some lettuce and tomatoes and pours grated cheese into a smaller bowl. Julia sets out the lettuce and tomatoes and the grated cheese and gets some taco shells and puts them in the microwave and starts it. When the microwave beeps, she takes out the taco shells and puts them on a larger plate. Julia pours all the taco mince into a larger bowl. Julia gets some sour cream and starts setting out plates and bowls with accessories and she looks at Alex with a loving look.
- You can start eating if you want.
Alex takes a taco shell and starts filling it. Julia also sits down at the table and takes a taco shell and fills it with the accessories she wants. Alex is hungry and starts eating when the taco shell is full. Julia goes into the kitchen and gets soda and fills Alex's glass and she also fills a glass with water because she doesn't want to drink soda. Alex and Julia eat in silence.
Oklahoma
It's no longer raining and Chupa wakes up in the cave. The homeless man is lying next to Chupa and he seems to be sleeping soundly. Chupa moves and goes to the cave's opening. Suddenly he hears heated voices and they approach the cave.
- I can't come home this drunk. My dad will go crazy. I'll have to sleep over at your place. Your dad probably doesn't gossip.
- But hey, that's not how we planned it.
- But now it has to be like this.
- I don't think it's such a good idea. We haven't been where we said we would be.
- What? It was your idea that we should go to Alan's house and drink ourselves silly.
The two young people walk past the cave and one of the young people throws a glass bottle into the cave and it ends up near Chupa. Chupa sniffs the bottle and it smells strong. The young people smell strong too. One of the young people goes astray and starts to fall but grabs a protruding rock from the cave and holds on to it.
- But what are you doing? Are you okay?
- Sure, tripped in the vegetation.
The young man holding the stone turns his head and sees Chupa. The two stare at each other. Chupa doesn't like the young man's look. The young man suddenly remembers that he saw a similar animal on the TV news and that a reward was promised if someone caught the animal. The young man points to Chupa so that his friend will also see the animal. Both young men look at Chupa.
- It's the same animal that they showed on TV. We'll catch it and get paid.
- We don't know what it is. I think we'll leave it alone.
- I want the money that was promised. I'm going to catch this animal.
- Tony, don't be stupid now.
Chupa gets worried and goes deeper. He doesn't trust the two young men. They don't seem to have kind intentions. Chupa accidentally steps on the homeless man's head and he wakes up and looks around and soon hears the voices of the young people. The homeless man gets up and goes to the cave opening and looks at the young people.
- This is our chance to get more money. Come on now.
- I'm not going to try to catch.. Shit! It's Cujo.
The homeless man is usually called Cujo by many because he is angry and has visible muscles. Tony doesn't want to fight Cujo and starts backing out of the cave.
- Sorry, didn't mean to disturb.
The homeless man spits on the ground and gives the young people an angry look.
- Get out of here. You have no business here.
The two young people run away and the homeless man smiles contentedly. He knows that some people think he's scary, but deep down he's very kind. The homeless man turns to Chupa.
- You can come forward now. They have run away.
Chupa makes little chirping noises and looks at the homeless man. Chupa would have liked to stay in the cave but he wants to find the boy and he feels hungry. Chupa smells goats and they seem to be nearby. Chupa walks past the homeless man and is not hindered. When Chupa comes out of the cave he spreads his wings and they have grown even more while he has been sleeping. Chupa is proud of his wings and he jumps into the air and starts flying.
Chupa follows the goat scent and it is not long before he flies over a zoo. It is the Oklahoma zoo and they have several goats in a pen. Chupa looks down at the many animal cages and smells the other animals and he does not understand why the animals are in cages. Several of the animal cages have metal roofs so the animals cannot see when Chupa flies above them but they can smell him. None of the animals have encountered a Chupacabra before so they have no idea what he is and that worries them.
The lions groan while the tigers growl. The monkeys make mocking noises to scare the intruder. The crocodiles growl deeply and the birds chirp loudly. The zoo has recently closed and the zookeepers are cleaning up after the visitors and they notice that something is disturbing the animals but they do not look up to the sky. If they had, they would have seen Chupa.
The goats are in a large, roofless enclosure and there are several pigs living in the enclosure. The children are supposed to be able to pet the goats and pigs and also feed them. Chupa finds the enclosure and lands and finds a suitable goat and satisfies his hunger. The goat does not make a sound but the other animals get nervous and run around making noise. A zookeeper is nearby and is getting food for the pigs and goats and when he enters the enclosure he sees Chupa. Chupa has let go of the goat when the zookeeper comes running. The zookeeper calls out to Chupa.
- Hey! What are you doing with the goat? Leave it alone.
Chupa spreads his wings and manages to fly so high that the zookeeper cannot catch him. The zookeeper reaches as high as he can and tries to catch Chupa but fails. Chupa rises higher and starts to leave the zoo. The zookeeper runs to the goat that was attacked and he can see that there are several drops of blood on the ground and a wound on the goat's stomach. The zookeeper picks up his walkie talkie and calls a colleague.
- Ronny here. We have a bad situation in the petting zoo. Please come quickly.
The colleague arrives after a short while and Ronny shows the attacked goat and the two discuss what to do. The decision is made to euthanize the goat because the animal that attacked it may have a contagious disease. Ronny euthanizes the goat while the colleague contacts a news agency and tells them what has happened. There is video surveillance and the colleague finds several good pictures of Chupa and sends them to the police and the news agency.
Meanwhile, Chupa flies on and leaves Oklahoma and approaches Arkansas. Chupa continues to search for the boy but finds nothing and he begins to get frustrated. Several adults and children see Chupa flying past their villas and they wonder what kind of animal it is. The rumor about the animal begins to spread on the internet. A worker at the Oklahoma newsroom finds the posts and decides to find out what kind of animal it is. The worker soon discovers that the animal has been sighted all the way from Mexico and he sees the similarity to the larger animals that have been seen in the Gila National Forest. It is worrying that the small animal has crossed the US border.

Alex and Julia have finished eating but are still sitting at the kitchen table. Julia wonders if Alex has any homework but he doesn't. Julia starts clearing the kitchen table and putting the plates in the dishwasher. Alex goes into his room and takes out the music box he bought and turns it up so that it starts playing. It doesn't take long before Julia is standing at the door.
- Oh, that old song. I remember it.
- My dad Beto always sang it when I was little and was going to bed.
- I remember. Where did you get the music box?
- I bought it today at a second-hand store. I ran in there when the bullies were chasing me.
- Okay. Mmm. I,m going to call their parents now. Do you want to be with me when I call?
- Preferably not because I don't think it will help.
Julia nods and goes out into the hall and makes the first call. Alex closes the door and turns on her stereo and listens to the cassette tape that Luna gave him. Alex takes out Chupa's feather and feels it. The feather is very soft but also stiff but doesn't feel like a bird feather. Chupa's scent is very special and Alex sniffs the feather so he can smell it better.
Alex is thinking about whether he should tell her about Chupa because he might be on his way here, but he can't decide. Julia would probably be very worried if she found out what happened at the ravine, even if Chupa saved Alex's life. The man who chased Chupa was scary, and it was lucky that Chava and the adult animals stopped him. Alex puts the feather back behind the Gizmo figure and he empties his school bag. They got a new book today and he leafs through it while he waits for Julia to finish her phone calls.
After a while, there's a knock on the door and Julia pokes her head in.
- I've talked to the parents. They're going to talk to their kids. Do you want watch some TV tonight? Masked Singer is starting soon. We can try to guess who's behind the masks.
- I'd love to.
Alex turns off his stereo and goes out into the living room. Alex usually records the program so he puts a blank videotape in the VCR. Julia turns on the TV and right now the news is showing but all that's left is the weather. The weather will be beautiful tomorrow but it will be windy during the night. The news ends and there's an ad before Masked Singer. Julia gets some snacks. Normally Alex only eats snacks on the weekend but now Julia offers extra snacks.
Masked Singer starts and as usual there are 12 costumes. One costume is supposed to represent a Chupacabra but it doesn't look like Chupa and his parents. Alex points to the costume and laughs.
- Chupacabras don't look like that. They're not reptiles. They have soft fur and long bird-like wings.
- Do they? I've never seen a chupacabra but it seems you have.
- I guess so.
Julia gives Alex a questioning look but he doesn't explain how he knows what they look like. Julia shrugs and thinks that Chava might have a picture of chupacabras and has shown it to Alex but she's wrong about that. Alex and Julia try to guess who is behind the costumes and Julia guesses that the snowman is a famous actor named Don Johnsson. The snowman is eliminated from the competition because he sings so badly and it turns out that Julia is right.
When the program is over, both Alex and Julia are sleepy and they go to bed. They soon fall asleep

The chupacabra family flies over the same dry landscape that Chupa flew earlier today and the father can smell Chupa. The family flies higher than they did before. This is mostly because the father has seen several military transports and he guesses that they are looking for them. But it's too late to turn back now.
When the family arrives at the villa community, the father senses that their child has been down by the villas and flown away and he understands that their child is looking for something. The father guesses that their child is looking for some of the children he saw and it irritates him. In a way, the child is more important than the family. It shouldn't be that way.
Since it is dark outside, no one sees the large animals as they pass. There is no surveillance where they can be seen. The family approaches Oklahoma and the father follows the scent trail of their young. He knows that they are approaching him. The father and the whole family decide to land in the same forest that Chupa visited and it is not long before they find the cave with the homeless man.
The homeless man is very surprised when these four large animals stand in front of him but he sees that they resemble the animal that visited the cave and he guesses that they are related to each other. The homeless man nods at the four animals.
- There is plenty of room here. Both you and I have room to sleep here. I will not disturb you.
The father is unsure if he can trust the man but he can smell his cubs scent in the cave and sees a wing feather that has fallen off. Their cub has definitely been here and there is nothing to indicate that the man has harmed the cub in any way so the father chooses to trust the man.
It becomes crowded in the cave when the entire chupacabra family enters and the homeless person chooses to sleep further in. The chupacabra family could have flown for another hour but they chose to stay here because the scent trail of the cub was so strong. After a short while, the chupacabra family falls asleep.

Kansas Erting Road 5
Utah
