We don't know how long it'll take to regrow, though. He Who Knows-What-He-Did has been kept prisoner for 43 years to get to the state he's in now. In the mean time, Kalgkur feels "maimed", especially since baxxid head crests are purposefully shaved and shaped into designs that "mark their clan affiliations, standing in baxxid society, and their professions, among other things". Without that crest, he may be wondering if he's even still a member of his clan or feeling like he's been branded an outcast, or something else. It had a meaning, but he hasn't said exactly what that meaning was.
Nell could be making a temporary prosthetic, or she could be gearing up to make The Mother of All Dangly Types and kickstart a revolution in baxxid fashion and culture, which Kal decides to make a permanent part of his identity. After all, nothing but the best for her boneworm beaux. ^_~

Moreover, right now, everyone can see his crest was violently cracked. Imagine how other Baxxid react to this. He already has a reputation as a dangerous murderer. Now, more obvious violence, and he can't even tell anyone it happened in defence of his new friends because he's not allowed to.
Very few yings have money. We haven't met every yinglet - there may be a few outliers, yinglets who managed to strike it rich through a lucky opportunity seized upon.
For one, we've seen yinglets can have stable jobs: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/15289339/
So they have money. It's not inconceivable that a yinglet employed for some years may, in their older age, become trusted enough to be promoted from mere servant of the house to head-servant. Or even that a fond employer may leave their house-yinglet a portion of money, or establish something like a trust fund, so that in the event of their early death then their faithful servant will be provided for.
Yinglets with cash to spare are going to be rare, but not entirely unheard-of.

Probably a mix of both, along with borderline romantic infatuation with the guy. Getting him a temporary decorative prosthetic horn is well within her capabilities to make and bring her bone guy some happiness, and maybe also some advertisement. Also, the possibility of starting a new market trend in bone worm accessories.
I'm thinking combination of the friction-fit and glue ideas. I had originally imagined a solid fin that would have to be fitted on top of the jagged surface using a plaster cast mold, but bruyaglovae made a good point about the advantages of a hollow one.
Also the measurements Nell is taking wouldn't be needed with a plaster cast, but they make sense as the major axis and perimeter of an ellipse. Maybe Nell planning to turn a circle into a conical shell and then slice it at an angle, which would also make it point backwards like a fin too, and the organically curving shape can be more easily hammered out from there. A structure like that would have a little give, so as it's pushed down to tighten I'm thinking that'd help form the metal around the exact shape.
There could even be a gap left running down the back like an aglet, from where the section is cut out of the circle to make a cone. As the piece is put on, the springy expansion from that would help add frictioney pressure. (I'm being so scientific here, using fancy words like frictioney).
But to make it stick more reliably and comfortably, Kal could definitely use some of that temporary glue they use for their color-coded head flags. See page #242 for the production process. Plus, it looks like it needs to be applied fresh with the assistance of a Helping Hand... I am of course imagining intimate Nell x Kalgkur scenes as they put it on in the morning.

yesss both of them, like clearly they are both in heaven right now but finally Nell has a way to initiate skin contact using her special interest as a guidebook. And no way is Kalgkur oblivious he's just too flustered and uncertain of his social protocols to process "girlfriend is touching my face and making me a gift"
He's already amazed Nell can create entirely new objects, entirely new concepts, out of "rocks" and inspiration. Now he's gonna find out she can make replacement body parts that way. Mind blown incoming!
--edit. I wonder if it will occur to her to make prosthetic gripper-tongs for the Braxxid, rather like primitive artificial arms?

An earlier page already shows baxxid do shape their 'hands', including implanting specialised tools for their profession. These are all static shapes though. A more elaborate mechanical gripper should be possible, but outside of her skill-set. Ask Ran where he gets his scientific instruments from.
so how many cross species relationships that could be considered partnerships are there in valsalia? and what's the ratios like elsewhere in the worlds towns and cities and why? ... might need a field manual for this one... I am certain Ran has run a few studies on cross species compatibilities,
If they were anything more than casual there would surely be a backlash. Humans are like that - just think of how violent the opposition used to be to inter-racial relationships, and imagine how well inter-species are going to go down.
Yinglets excluded, but that's because everyone understands sex with a yinglet isn't really a relationship. It's just sex. When it's done you can agree never, ever to speak about it again. Until the next time.

The way I see it, it's a question (and measure) of societal integration. Backlash against inter-anything relationships usually boils down to an insider-outsider dynamic - the sense of what even constitutes a different race is actually a sensibility that forms after and in response to that kind of conflict. Also bear in mind this is a world where the concept of "species" doesn't have quite the same meaning as how the word is used in our world.
But I suspect PyelusBird may be right in that there would be some resistance to it. Based on the kind of PA posters we've seen, it looks like most Val Salians react with fear toward the indrel, and paranoia and dismissiveness toward the yinglets, but the more I think about it the more baxxid culture and their relationship with House Ivenmoth make me think of historical parallels. They're not 'foreign' or 'alien', and non-baxxid want them around because they can do things other people can't, but the peace works by mentally partitioning Val Salian society into two separate groups, connected through the tradehouse because it's stabilized by people's faith in trademaster Viracroix.
The Regional Field Guide: Baxxid is so telling, if you read past the surface to look at how it's phrased, what it emphasizes, when subjective assertions with adverbs and adjectives start popping up, it shows that House Ivenmoth is having to expend a lot of effort to convince people that they're supposed to be fine with each other. And yet it's written with clear distinctions between "us" and "them."
Also so much of the early storyline involved characters learning to adjust their thinking and become more open minded because of their obligations as military professionals (as opposed to militia conscripts)... That's why I originally got introduced to the webcomic. Nell is one of the first characters we've really gotten to know who isn't either a soldier or a politician.
On the other hand, I think Isher's situation points to some complex dynamics that vary from place to place in this world. Coinciding with Nell & Kalgkur's relationship picking up, I feel like this is a sign that Valsalia's gearing up for some full-on worldbuilding around this topic. So hopefully we will in fact be getting answers soon!

He isn't just a guard: He was promoted to the position of guard on the personal endorsement of the baxxid elder directly to the Trademaster himself as the personal bodyguard to a diplomat who may be key to establishing friendlier and more prosperous relations with the enclave. Kal may be in for quite the surprise come pay day.
I don't know how their pay structure works, but Kal went overnight from the lowest guard position to one of the most prestigious and important positions any guard can hold without being an officer. I would imagine such a position comes with some pay benefits, as well as making him a prime candidate for further promotion if he performs well.
This does pose a problem for Kal in that he isn't too enthused about violence, even if he is very good at it, and might much prefer a nice command position behind a desk.

I love how the camera angle puts the bandana symbolically right over Kal's fin, Valsalia is doin' the art. It also kinda makes me think of those old cartoons where the hat hovers off the character's head when they get excited by a girl.
But also now I can't not see the timid little expression with Kal's pedipalp thingies. He would have liked... but he also very much likes what's happening now >,.<

He is going to be the prettiest & most unique Baxxid out there. The others are going to be so jealous! Nell is going to find herself doing these for all the Baxxids. Maybe they'll give her precious gems and other expensive baubles they find gaudy and useless. Do Baxxids use money?
Yo,OOPsies! I'm here to remind you once again that there's a place called "Top Web Comics" https://www.topwebcomics.com/?home=3 that compiles comics from various places. There's a bunch of cool stuff there. They have monthly votes, so you can support OOPs there. You can vote once a day per device, so your PC, laptop, tablet, phone, etc.
I've noticed that you can sometimes even get in extra votes from different IP addresses, or if you're disconnected from your IP and open up again later.
It closed out last month at 817+ votes and 30th place. It's currently at 376 votes and 28th place. The highest it's reached is 24th place, and the top vote getters seem to end up with something over 20,000+ votes, at least recently.
Vote early, vote often! Help OOPs get noticed!

Ah yes "unexplainable human behaviors". So strange that only the majority of humans and the more clever of yinglets could immediate intuit what Nell could be up to. Now the question is, how many baxxid could guess what's going on? Are they just *that* alien in thought process? Or is Kalgkur just *that* oblivious? Also if you told him she's making a "hornament" how long would it take for him to parse the word play?
