Here's a concept drawing of Tamias in his Ultimate form, the result of fusing with the Synergy Crystal the source of the Chipmunk Kingdom's power. In the very rare instance of a fusion occurring the fused Chipmunk wields all of the Power of Tawa, deity of the Sun. What this means for the bad guy is any ambition to vanquish Tamias and plunge the world into Darkness will be utterly obliterated as the power of an entire star is at Tamias's beckoning call.
However the fusion is rare for good reason. This technique can only last for a limited time as it places tremendous stress on Tamias to the point of being life threatening if maintained too long. Jerry Lee the only other Chipmunk to achieve fusion did not survive its use. Think of connecting a loudspeaker directly to an electrical outlet. Its guaranteed not last very long. Also harnessing the power of Tawa directly in this manner is extremely destructive thus relegating the fusion as weapon of last resort.

Well, using a star as an energy well is convenient due to the depth of the well but when you consider the power output of even a small red dwarf star, mortal stuff trying to channel it might get a tad singed. If you've ever touched a live household (120 Volts) circuit then you know how little power it takes to mess with biological systems. Channeling an entire star could be messy.
What happens if he loses control of the power? Does he simply cease to exist and the power surge dissipates, or does it continue to channel for a period of time? Do the crystals on his back help channel the energy properly to avoid the above-mentioned singeing?

The Crystals on his back do aid in channeling Tawa's powers properly prolonging the duration of the Fusion. But even at that the Fusion can only be maintain for a limit time due to funneling all that tremendous power through a mortal body. As for being out of control. Its is of concern. But a chipmunk who has mastered the art of using the Synergy Crystal to a level of having even a remote chance of attempting fusion is very likely be able to channel and control the power enough to apply it to its intended purpose. Even so no amount of control could ever fully contain the titanic forces being harnessed and applied. Therefore it is the inevitable collateral damage caused during combat that limits the Fusion as a means of last resort.
