"Reverie: a state of dreamy meditation or fanciful musing". The familiar yet new environment plants the seeds of curiosity within Runo's mind, inexperienced for now, though ever growing and ever adaptable will this avali be...

Another scene down, worried about the slow pacing, though I feel like it was best to take the time to characterize Runo a bit more, make him feel a bit more alive for the future. As mentioned before, character driven stuff was never my strong suit even when I studied English... Feedback welcome!

Reverie
A short while passed before Runo finished his cut. He opened his eyes and checked over his crudely repaired laser cutter. The barrel and focusing array had partially melted, he gave a small sigh, it was disappointing, but to be expected. Still, not like he paid for it at least. His attention turned to the metal door he had cut through, a scraggly line of glowing plasma now trickling down the path cut, though the chunk of isolated metal remained still. Once again, Runo glanced around for a moment before muttering quietly to himself.
“…Is it supposed to fall on its own...? No- why would it? doesn’t seem safe to push it though… do I just- “
He reached out and pushed the centre of the isolated metal firmly, it fell back into the wreckage with almost no resistance. Runo recoiled and flinched from a mix of the unexpected ease, loud crash, and to avoid a few drops of molten metal dripping from the top of the fresh cut, partially singeing a feather on his winged arm. As he checked his arm’s condition, his gaze drifted towards the makeshift laser cutter in his hand, and towards the doorway he had cut.
There was no denying there was a certain thrill that came from the unknown, from pushing boundaries, from breaking through what was once never even a consideration. A small smirk crept across his face, perhaps in the near future he could break through metal barriers like it was second nature, he could explore anywhere in any wreckage, forge and cut his own path forward in any future expeditions. The avali’s time spent pondering gave enough time for the edges of the cut to cool down, as the avian refocused, he slowly and cautiously stepped through, mindful still to avoid contact with the edges, before glancing around.
Immediately, Runo was struck by a strange sense of déjà vu as he drew an unsteady breath, now standing in the corridor that once led to the central elevator of Celestial, with cargo bays on each side. It was a strange sensation, it’s not like he would’ve ever had any reason to be there while the ship was operational, though at the same time made some semblance of sense. After all, whether he remembered or not, one thing was certain, he like everyone else in the colony, originated from Celestial.
It was hard to pin down exactly how the avali felt, as he took a few tentative steps down the ruined corridor, once flush, sleek and pristine now decayed, decrepit and desolate in disrepair as cables lay exposed in the walls and from the ceilings like exposed arteries of the colossal construct. It was obviously unsettling to a degree, and yet the familiarity of what once was also lent a sense of almost comfort. Once the very thing guarding and garnering life against the vast and unforgiving expanse of space around it, now gutted itself, though in a way, the avali’s presence now gave credence to the idea that even in Celestial’s destructive demise, it kept the life within safe to flourish once more.
The sentimental moment caused Runo to slow down for a moment, just long enough for the fatigue of the 15km expedition to catch up. His body ached, he was tired and needed time to rest, the adrenaline from the initial thrill and excitement began to wear off. The avian noticed a fallen locker laying across the width of the corridor, and settled on it like a bench, taking off his backpack and resting it on the ground between his legs and pulling out a short-term ration bar. They didn’t last long, but had more flavour, ideal for short expeditions such as this.
The bar itself was synthetic but closely mimicked the flavour and texture of dried and cured meat, and despite its synthetic nature, Runo had always enjoyed them. He couldn’t help but give a small, satisfied smile as his tail swayed idly behind him. As he ate, he gazed over the shattered interior, even in its current state it provided refuge from the icy gusts outside, there was sure to be good scrap around here, it was quiet, he had some good food, things were going well.
A quiet moment passed, until he found himself bouncing his leg impatiently, he was eager to see what lie within these two minor cargo holds, whether there were any tools or equipment valuable to salvage and sell, yet his body still ached. If he took the time to rest, there was a real possibility of running out of sunlight, though if he didn’t rest then he’s be too exhausted for the trek back anyway. Whatever he did, he was likely going to have to stay the night… yet another oversight from inexperience… though it’s not like conditions were too dissimilar to his tent back at the colony, perhaps it wouldn’t be that bad to take shelter for the night.
Runo emptied his bags, placing their equipment in the fallen locker before laying them down, forming a slightly softer spot to lay down on. As he put his gear away, he also noticed what seemed to be a spare uniform long abandoned in the locker, too big for him, but ideal to provide some further bedding. With a content sigh, the avian lay down as he closed his eyes. It wasn’t as comfortable as he hoped. Still, there was little choice, and besides, the sense of déjà vu gave him plenty to ponder over as he awaited sleep.
Conditions were rough, but Runo believed he could get used to it, after all, all his needs were met, shelter, food and water, as well as scrap to sell for better gear. In that sense, conditions could only improve. As he lay there, he opened his eyes for a moment, and up above him he could see a small crack in the hull, providing him a slim slither of space to see the stars above. He never thought much about them before, each night was the same after all, though here in the remains of Celestial, the avali couldn’t help but wonder what it must’ve been like, how it must’ve felt, how… freeing it must be to travel between the stars like the bridge crew of Celestial did…
